Sant Ferriol brings together several themes for trip planning: Romanesque architecture, a historic sanctuary, described routes and the Ser River at El Torn. The details can be distinguished by architectural history, route features and season—useful when choosing a focus for your stay.

Romanesque Churches in Fares and Sant Fruitós

Santa Maria de Fares is located in the centre of Fares, near the road between Banyoles and Besalú. The church has been documented since 977 and has Romanesque origins. The date and architectural classification refer to different historical details: 977 is the date it was documented, not a construction date.

The church of Sant Fruitós also has a long history. It was first documented in 977 under the historical name “Sancti Fructuosi de Ursiniano.” The present building dates from the 12th century. It is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse on the east side; it was remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. “Single-nave” describes a church space consisting of one main nave. An apse is a usually semicircular end to the church space; “on the east side” identifies its position in the building. These terms help distinguish the architectural details: the first describes the layout of the church space, while the other two describe the shape and location of the apse.

Sant Ferriol Sanctuary: History and Panorama

The Sant Ferriol sanctuary lies at an altitude of 366 metres above sea level, near the right bank of the Fluvià in the eastern part of the municipality. It has been documented since 1495 and was built in the 17th century.

The sanctuary offers panoramic views of Alta Garrotxa and the Pyrenees. On a clear day, the Bay of Roses is also visible.

Routes and Their Different Features

The route to La Miana begins in the settlement of Sant Ferriol, in front of the town hall, at the Itinerànnia junction SF1. It leads to the church of Sant Miquel, the rectory and the remains of the old castle in La Miana.

The short health route begins beside the Sant Ferriol town hall. It passes through a mosaic of cultivated land and holm oak forests and is described as short, easy and involving only small changes in elevation.

The long health route has its own waymarking: it does not follow the Itinerànnia network. Instead, follow the markings for the health routes of the Girona Provincial Council.

Summer Swimming at El Torn

The Ser River has clear water at El Torn. People swim there in summer. Check local water conditions and safety before swimming.
