Regencós: Landscape and Architectural History
Accommodation in Regencós
Townscape and Landscape
Regencós lies at the foot of Quermany Gros. The plateau-shaped hill is a characteristic feature of the landscape across a large part of Baix Empordà. The townscape is defined by a small stone settlement and narrow streets; cultivated fields and forests surround the houses. In Regencós, a compact townscape meets a landscape feature that has significance beyond the settlement. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Regencós, you can first consider whether the landscape, architectural history or a specific festival date should be the deciding factor. The town’s distinctive features offer different points of interest, from the shape of the hill to individual historic buildings and traces of craftsmanship.
Walls and Church Architecture
The walls of Regencós form a rectangular outline. One corner tower stands in the southwest, and another in the western area. The walls may date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Their possible date of construction provides a historical context; their described shape and the positions of the two towers also give a concrete impression of the fortifications.
Until 1788, the Església de Sant Vicenç belonged to the parish of Begur; the church was completed around 1815. Its single-nave layout, side chapels and polygonal apse describe the structure of the religious building. A single-nave church has one main nave, with side chapels extending it on either side. The polygonal apse forms an end with multiple sides. This makes it possible to consider the church’s architecture through its spatial layout, while the rectangular outline and positions of the towers are the main features of the walls.
Portal, Farmhouses and Craftsmanship
The date 1782 and a patriarchal cross are preserved on the portal of Cases Noves No. 15. The portal’s date precedes the approximate completion of the Església de Sant Vicenç; however, it is a separate architectural detail. The dated portal and the church, with its spatial layout, can therefore be viewed as distinct examples of architectural history.
Puigcalent is a group of farmhouses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, located 800 metres from the town of Regencós. The group broadens the view of individual features of the town to include agricultural buildings. Together with the walls, the church and the portal, it offers a range of architectural scales: a wall complex, a religious building, an individual portal and a group of farmhouses.
The Rajoleria de Josep Ferrer is considered the last surviving evidence of Regencós’ tile-making craft. As its preservation status may change, check the latest information in advance if this craft is important to your travel plans.
La Castanyada in Regencós
La Castanyada is a popular festival featuring the preparation and tasting of roasted chestnuts, as well as leisure and cultural activities. The recorded date is 4 October. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance. You can then plan your travel dates around the occasion, while the walls, church architecture and other features of the town shape Regencós’ architectural history regardless.
