Navata offers several ways to explore its history: the small historic centre with narrow streets and fortification remains, the parish church of Sant Pere and the castle ruins. Churches in Can Miró and Canelles add further historic sites to the picture. When planning your trip, you can take in the town’s history and religious architecture, as well as a route with views over the Empordà plain.

Historic Centre and Medieval Route

Narrow streets and the remains of an old fortification define the historic centre. The connection between the townscape and the town wall is particularly clear on Carrer de la Muralla: the façades were built on the southern wall of the former fortified district. This section of wall dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The street thus offers a tangible link to the architectural history of the town centre.

The route through medieval Navata is signposted and documented. It takes you through the narrow streets to learn about the town’s history. Check local guidance on organising the route before your trip.

Sant Pere: Building History and Murals

The parish church of Sant Pere de Navata is a large religious building from the 17th century. Construction began on 22 December 1638 and was completed in 1746, so its building history spans the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, there are very well-preserved 18th-century murals. The construction chronology and the murals each give the church a distinct historical focus: the building can be placed in context through its long construction timeline, while the murals represent a later century in its interior.

Navata Castle

The castle is documented from 1051. At that time, it was granted to Count Bernat of Besalú, who founded the Barony of Navata. Today, the features described are those of the ruins: they lie 2 km from the village and are difficult to access. Take this access into account when planning your visit, rather than treating the castle as an easy addition to a visit to the town centre.

The best-preserved section of wall is on the western side. It adjoins a cylindrical tower at the southwestern corner.

Other Churches in Can Miró and Canelles

The churches in Can Miró and Canelles also represent different points in history. The parish church in Can Miró, dedicated to Saint Peter, was already in existence in 1019. Canelles lies south of Navata; its church of Sant Esteve dates from the Romanesque period of the 11th or 12th century and was extensively remodelled later. The two dates thus range from the early mention of the church in Can Miró to a Romanesque building whose appearance was substantially altered later.

Scenery Along the BTT Route

Another perspective is offered by BTT Route 10, “Masies del vent de Navata i Lladó”. It runs along the northern slope of the municipality of Navata and offers a magnificent view of the Empordà plain. This gives it a different focus from the route through the narrow streets: here, the landscape takes centre stage, while the other route focuses on the history of the medieval town centre. If you are looking for a hotel in Navata, these different themes can help guide your choice of destination.
