Estartit’s coastal character can be seen from different perspectives at Platja Gran, around the Illes Medes and in the older streets. When planning your trip, you can consider the beach, natural environment and maritime culture as distinct highlights.

Beach and islands

Platja Gran is more than three kilometres long. Its main section, facing the town, has fine sand and shallow water. If you are considering a stay focused on the beach, its length and characteristics offer a useful point of reference. The Illes Medes add a protected island environment to this coastal setting: they are part of the Parc Natural del Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter, and lie about one nautical mile off the beach at l’Estartit.

The Illes Medes are a destination for scuba diving. The harbour at l’Estartit has glass-bottom boats and boats for divers. The focus differs depending on what you are looking for: Platja Gran offers a long stretch of fine-sand beach with shallow water, while the island group offers a natural environment and scuba diving.

Maritime culture and nature interpretation

The Espai Medes, a centre for discovering and learning about the Illes Medes and the town’s maritime culture, is located in the harbour at l’Estartit. It offers an interactive experience for adults and children. The exhibition “Un viatge al fons del mar” also uses technology and interactive features to present the natural environment’s distinctive features, its biological diversity and the richness of the seabed.

If you are choosing between interactive interpretation and independent exploration, the formats are clearly distinct: Espai Medes is a centre offering an interactive experience, while the Itinerarios are self-guided routes. This lets you distinguish between learning about nature and maritime culture through interpretation and exploring along a route.

Routes and fishing heritage

The educational Itinerario del Estar y el Tit is a self-guided route exploring l’Estartit’s fishing heritage and natural landscapes. Its accompanying materials include activities and games featuring the characters Estar and Tit. By contrast, the self-guided route “l’Estartit, terra de pescadors” explores the town’s maritime origins through its oldest streets. If you are choosing by theme, the distinction is useful: the Itinerario combines natural and fishing heritage, while “terra de pescadors” explores the town’s maritime origins through its streets.

An excursion on Núria, a fishing boat more than 80 years old, offers another way to experience artisanal fishing. You can learn about the work of l’Estartit’s artisanal fishers. The routes and excursion have different focuses: the routes explore fishing heritage, nature or local history, while Núria focuses on the work of the fishers.

Coastal landscape and respect for the environment

La Pletera, between Els Griells and the Gola del Ter, is a typical Mediterranean coastal ecosystem. If you are interested in coastal landscapes as well as beaches and islands, it offers a distinct point of interest.

When visiting protected areas, please do not enter the dunes and stay on the designated paths.
