Sant Marçal: Discover cultural heritage and festivals
Accommodation in Sant Marçal
Sant Marçal offers several ways to plan a trip: its church and cultural heritage, two festivals throughout the year, and wine and cava tastings at Oriol Rossell. The figures Drac and Gegants and the Sínia de Sant Marçal also shape the town’s cultural identity. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sant Marçal, you can plan your stay around a particular festival or a visit to the winery.
Local history between the church and the Sínia
Sant Marçal Church is in the highest part of the town centre and is listed in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The old church preserves a decorated, lidless ossuary dating from the 14th century. Thus, the town’s cultural heritage includes both the church’s location and a specific historical detail.
The Sínia de Sant Marçal is located on the old road from Sant Marçal to Múnia. The exterior cogwheel mechanism and the mechanism connected to the animal that powered the well are preserved there. These components offer insight into the construction of animal-powered water technology.
The pair of figures known as the Gegants de Sant Marçal consists of Marçal and Montanyans. They represent agriculture and civilisation in Roman times and refer to archaeological finds from that period in the town centre. The Drac de Sant Marçal was built by local residents in 1983. It appears at the Festa Major and in several places in the Penedès; individual appearances may vary. The Gegants currently take part in the Festa Major and some regional giants’ gatherings, although their appearances may also change.
Festivals with different highlights
The Festa Major de Sant Marçal is celebrated in honour of Sant Marçal on the second weekend of July. The evening programme includes a Correfoc, followed by fireworks and then a dance or concert. Exact dates may vary from year to year; check the event date for the year you plan to travel.
The Festa d’hivern de Sant Marçal is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and takes place during the holiday period of the Puríssima Concepció. Events include a procession and a dance by the Gegants de Sant Marçal; in the afternoon, the festival ends with a theatrical performance. Individual events may change. In contrast to the Festa Major, the focus here is on the procession, dance and theatre, while the summer festival features the Correfoc and fireworks.
A walk and a winery visit
A public walk around Sant Marçal is organised on the Saturday before the Festa Major weekend. Its date may vary. The VII. Pujada a Montanyans is a separate historical reference: its 2022 edition featured a 13-kilometre route that could be completed running or walking. This distance and the two formats refer to the 2022 edition.
Oriol Rossell offers visitors tastings of its wines and cavas, as well as experiences to discover the winery. The various options also explore the history of Cal Cassanyes. Oriol Rossell is located on the Propietat Cal Cassanyes estate, s/n, in Sant Marçal, Castellet i la Gornal. As tasting formats and visitor experiences may change, check the current offer before making plans.
