Garraf: Beach, Heritage and Trails in Parc del Garraf
Accommodation in Garraf
Garraf combines the seaside character of the village centre with architectural and natural features in the surrounding area. Along the Platja, huts in the sand define the coastline; the Església and El Castellet tell the story of its architectural heritage, while trails and activities in Parc del Garraf appeal to other interests.
A beachside setting in the village centre
Platja de Garraf is in the village centre. Thirty-three fishermen’s huts and former huts used by railway workers stand in the sand and shape the beach. Wooden bathing cabins associated with swimmers have also been preserved there. The Platja can therefore be described both by its location in the village and by the distinctive structures on the sand. Garraf Baixador railway station is 25 m from the beach. As details of railway services may change, check the timetable before you travel.
Church, castle ruins and GaudĂ
The Església de Garraf was consecrated in 1955 and is dedicated to Santa Maria Estrella del Mar. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the porch is formed by round arches, and the bell tower is square. The floor plan describes the shape of the church, while the arches and tower are two further specific architectural features.
At El Castellet de Garraf, the remains include sections of the fortification walls, the ascent path, three cisterns, an entrance arch and several interior rooms. The site contains the remains of a rock castle and probably also those of the vanished monastery of Sant Vicenç de Garraf. The monastery attribution is therefore probable, not a certain identification. El Castellet is next to the path that climbs from Garraf and offers wide-ranging views of the surrounding massif and coastline. Celler GĂĽell in Garraf is a work by Antoni GaudĂ. Together, the church, the remains of the rock castle and the Celler offer different architectural points of interest.
Landscape and trails in Parc del Garraf
La Falconera Cave lies in the cliffs of Garraf, in the surrounding area. It extends for about 600 m and consists of shafts, galleries and small chambers. Its length and layout give an idea of the extent and variety of features of this natural landmark.
A route leads from Garraf railway station to Palau Novella. It passes through the wild landscapes of Parc del Garraf and offers views of the blue sea and far-reaching horizons. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out.
In the surrounding area, Centre d'InformaciĂł La Pleta provides general information about the services and facilities of Parc del Garraf. From Garraf railway station, the information centre can be reached via the GR 92 CamĂ de les Costes, after about 3.5 km. Adapted equipment is available to borrow free of charge: handbikes, third wheels that can be fitted to wheelchairs, and adapted route guides about flora and fauna. If borrowing this equipment is important for your plans, you can check availability in advance.
Water sports at Port del Garraf
At the foot of Parc del Garraf, Port del Garraf has a centre for sports activities. Activities associated with the port include sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, friendly keelboat and dinghy regattas, and diving trips. The range therefore extends from paddle sports to regattas and diving trips. If a particular activity is important for your trip, check in advance whether it is available on your travel dates.
