Els Prats De Rei: Roman Traces and Local History
Accommodation in Els Prats De Rei
Els Prats de Rei brings together historical landmarks from several periods: Roman remains, a medieval town centre and routes linked to historical events. The landscape and cultural events add to this picture. When planning your trip, you can choose what to focus on based on your own interest in history, nature or festivals.
The landscape of the Anoia comarca
Els Prats de Rei lies on the Segarra plateau in the Anoia comarca, in a small valley formed by the upper reaches of the Anoia River. About 40 per cent of the municipality is forested. Aleppo pine and black pine are the dominant species, alongside smaller stands of oaks, kermes oaks and holm oaks. The municipality’s landscape therefore includes both the plateau and valley, as well as several types of forest. If you are interested in the area’s natural surroundings as well as its history, these details offer specific information about its location and the composition of its woodlands.
Historic town centre and Roman remains
The historic town centre preserves the layout of the town that was once surrounded by walls. Narrow medieval lanes and notable buildings define this part of Els Prats de Rei. The atrium of the parish church of Santa Maria contains five Roman grave slabs dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. The town thus brings together evidence from different periods: the preserved layout of a once-walled town and grave slabs from the Roman era. The slabs provide a specific archaeological point of interest, while the lanes and buildings give the centre its historic character.
Sites from the War of the Spanish Succession
At the end of 1711, the Torre de la Manresana served as an observation post for the Habsburg army during the Battle of Prats de Rei against Bourbon troops. The battle took place in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession. The Ruta de la Batalla dels Prats de Rei takes in the battle’s main historic sites from 1711. It can be completed on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by quad bike. The route and the tower’s history offer different perspectives: the route focuses on the sites, while the Torre’s role as an observation post highlights a specific military function.
Another historic route
A different period is explored by the Ruta dels Espais de Memòria de l'Hospital Militar de Campanya de l'XI Republican Army Corps. This urban walking tour visits the sites of the field hospital during the Spanish Civil War and explains a local historical event from 1938 and 1939. Unlike the route covering the 1711 battle, this one focuses on the field hospital and a later chapter in the town’s history. The two routes therefore offer different historical themes to help you plan your visit.
Festivals and cultural events
The Pessebre Vivent has been performed in Els Prats de Rei since 1972. At the annual Sopar Romà , the menu and staging recreate the Roman era; here, antiquity is presented as a cultural event, unlike the grave slabs in the atrium. The Festa Major takes place from 13 to 16 August, with 15 August as its main day. Many festive and cultural events are held in the historic centre, particularly in Plaça Major. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festa Major, check the event dates in advance.
