Bagá: Mountain Trails and Medieval Heritage
Accommodation in Bagá
When choosing a hotel in Bagá, the focus of your trip can be a helpful guide: would you like to discover the mountain landscape and its routes, or explore the town’s medieval architecture and history above all? Named trails, distinctive mountain ranges and historic buildings offer concrete starting points for planning your trip.
Mountain Landscape and Getting Your Bearings in the Natural Park
The Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró is a mountain park whose elevations range from 800 m in the valley bottoms to 2,648 m at Puig de la Canal Baridana. It consists largely of limestone and includes the Cadí and Moixeró mountain ranges, as well as the Pedraforca, Tossa and Puigllançada massifs. These elevations and names give you a concrete way to understand the character of this landscape.
The information and interpretation centre for the Parc Natural in Bagá offers visitor information, a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions and audiovisual content. If you plan to visit the centre, check the latest opening information beforehand.
Routes with Different Highlights
On the Els Empedrats route, water and the course of the trail are the main features: it crosses the dels Empedrats river several times and passes the Bullidor de la llet waterfall at the foot of the Torrent del Forat. To access the route, after crossing the bridge over the dels Empedrats river, turn left onto the PR-125, marked with white and yellow paint. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The GR 107, also known as the Camí dels Bons Homes, crosses the Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró lengthwise, passing through Gósol, Bagà and Bellver de Cerdanya. The Ruta dels Contrabandistes has a different historical focus: it follows an old smuggling route from Cerdanya to Berguedà. This route can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or by car; reaching Paller de Dalt by vehicle requires using a forest track. The options are therefore easy to distinguish: river crossings and a waterfall on Els Empedrats, and a historic route with several ways to get around on the Contrabandistes.
Coll de Pal is 19 km from Bagà. From Bagá, the access route follows Avinguda Reina Elisenda and then the signposted road to Coll de Pal. As road conditions and seasonal restrictions may change, check the latest information before driving.
Medieval Architecture and Local History
Since the city of Bagà was founded in 1233, the Palau dels Pinós has been the residence of the Barons of Pinós. In the former Palau de Pinós, the Centre Medieval i dels Càtars presents a permanent exhibition about Catharism and the Middle Ages in Bagà. This offers a look at the history of the barons, the medieval town and Catharism.
The Església de Sant Esteve de Bagà was completed in 1339 and illustrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Its sculpted Gothic portal is considered the most important example of Gothic architecture in the comarca. Plaça Galceran de Pinós offers another glimpse of the medieval town centre: the square is lined with arcades and surrounded by notable old buildings.
Historic buildings with different features can also be found beyond the town centre. The Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Paller was built in 1747 and has a Baroque high altarpiece. At the Pont romànic del riu Bastareny, surviving mills along the river bear witness to Bagà’s long history of economic activity by the water.
Fia-Faia and the Winter Solstice
Fia-Faia is one of the fire festivals held around the winter solstice in the Pyrenees. UNESCO recognised the festival on 1 December 2015. This date indicates when it was recognised; the buildings, routes and landscape features offer other aspects of Bagà to consider when planning your stay.
