Explore Villacañas through a variety of themes: lagoons and trails shape the landscape, while museums and buildings tell stories of everyday life, art and architecture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Villacañas, these themes can help guide your travel plans: would you like to explore natural areas, learn about local history, or combine both?

Lagoons and trails nearby

Laguna Larga de Villacañas covers 84 hectares, has no outflow and has been shaped by human influences. It is home to a large flamingo colony; numbers may vary depending on the season and water conditions. A turnoff less than one kilometre from the main route leads to Laguna Larga and the Observatorio del Flamenco. As local access conditions may change, it’s advisable to check them before visiting.

Laguna de Tirez is another distinctive landscape in the area. It covers 89 hectares, has no outflow and is hypersaline—that is, particularly rich in salt. It may dry up completely in summer. Compared with Laguna Larga, the two bodies of water therefore differ in both size and salinity, as well as in their possible seasonal water levels.

La Larga, Laguna de Peña Hueca, Laguna de Tirez, La Redondilla and La Gramosa are near Villacañas and form part of the La Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve. Knowing their names can help you find your way if you want to explore several lagoons rather than just one destination.

There are several ways to plan your routes. The first stage of the Camino Natural de los Humedales de La Mancha runs between Villacañas and Quero. The Vía Verde del Trenillo is a different route: it is 24.98 kilometres long, developed and runs through Villacañas. The route is suitable for walkers, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. These details therefore refer to different aspects: a stage between two towns on the one hand, and the length and accessibility of a developed route on the other.

Museums, art and architectural history

The Museo Municipal del Silo is located in one of Villacañas’s characteristic excavated silos. These silos are examples of the vernacular architecture of La Mancha. The museum recreates scenes of traditional everyday life and displays agricultural tools, household objects and furniture, as well as items related to farming, food production and local customs. The site thus brings together an example of local building traditions and themes from daily life.

The Casa-Museo de la Tía Sandalia offers a different focus. Its collection comprises 66 freestanding sculptures, 40 bas-reliefs, 26 canvases and fresco paintings. The religious art was created by a self-taught artist who depicted biblical scenes in her own home. Among other materials, she used plaster, lime, tempera paints, cardboard, fabrics, wire, branches, vine wood, household tools and even her own hair. The range of materials and variety of works offer a concrete insight into her artistic process.

The Ermita de San Roque offers another distinct architectural landmark: built around 1835 in the vernacular style, it has a single rectangular nave. Details of military-influenced architecture and the cross of Saint John can be found in Villacañas, among other places, in connection with the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Viga, the Casa de la Tercia and the monumental Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

Traditions and travel planning

The Danzantes y Santísimo Cristo de la Viga celebration includes dances with sticks, castanets and ribbons. Specific events may vary. So if you’d like to time your trip to coincide with the celebration, check the event dates in advance. This will help you decide whether to focus your stay on the landscapes and routes or include a particular cultural event.
