Valdeverdeja can be explored through a range of themes: the landscape along the Tagus, rural cultural heritage, traditional architecture and a protected local tradition. These include the PR-TO 27 trail, the Pozos Nuevos complex, the Church of San Blas and the Carnaval de Ánimas o Soldadesca. You can therefore plan your trip around your interests in landscapes, buildings or cultural history.

The Tagus, the trail and the townscape

The PR-TO 27 trail connects the town centre of Valdeverdeja with the River Tagus. For a hike, this route provides a tangible link between the town and the river. The Tagus Valley around Valdeverdeja is of great ecological and scenic value and is well suited to walks and outdoor activities. The trail and the valley offer different perspectives: the PR-TO 27 connects two clearly identified points, while the valley brings the wider landscape into view.

Valdeverdeja is also known for its traditional architecture, including whitewashed houses and architectural features typical of the comarca. Alongside the landscape, the townscape itself is another way to get to know Valdeverdeja.

Rural heritage and historic sites

Outside the town centre, in a small valley southeast of the town, lies the Pozos Nuevos complex. It consists of 119 wells and their washing areas. As an ethnographic complex, Pozos Nuevos represents a rural society with a household-based economy. The wells and washing areas give this context a tangible form: the complex combines visible features with the themes of rural everyday life and a household-based way of making a living.

The Museo Etnográfico de Valdeverdeja preserves traditional heritage, crafts and the rural way of life characteristic of La Jara. Alongside the Pozos Nuevos complex, there is therefore also a museum devoted to these themes. Another protected cultural heritage site is the Lagar de los Pozos Nuevos in Valdeverdeja, which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).

The Molino de los Rebollos is a significant hydraulic complex among Valdeverdeja’s historic watermills. Watermills associated with the Molino de los Rebollos are already mentioned in Philip II’s descriptions from the 16th century. The historic heritage therefore includes both a named complex and early written records of the watermills.

Church and cultural tradition

The Church of San Blas dates from the 16th century. Its furnishings include a pulpit, holy-water stoups and a baptismal font. There is also a washbasin set into a wall of the sacristy. The church’s date and the specific details of its furnishings complement each other: they place the building in time while also identifying individual features of its interior.

The Carnaval de Ánimas o Soldadesca de Valdeverdeja is protected as intangible cultural heritage and classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Its protection is dated 3 February 2025. The tradition has a military character and includes dances, drumbeats and the flag dance. This cultural tradition complements the town’s architectural heritage; its protected status and specific elements give it its own historical and cultural dimension.
