Los Alares – Río Estenilla, Trails and Slate Architecture
Accommodation in Los Alares
In Los Alares, the river landscape, trails and village character offer different reasons to visit. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: should your trip focus mainly on the routes along the Río Estenilla, or would you also like to take in the architecture and historic details of the village? The distinctions below give you specific points of reference for planning.
Hiking and cycling along the Río Estenilla
The PR-TO 48 Las Hoces del Río Estenilla circular route is 11.8 kilometres long, is rated easy and takes an estimated three hours. It is fully accessible by bicycle. Length, estimated duration, difficulty rating and cycling access are separate details you can take into account when planning your outings. The trail passes through Los Alares twice. In the northern section, it runs through pine forests and towards Cerro Alares and La Joyona.
Near Los Alares, a signposted circular route follows paths and trails parallel to the Río Estenilla, with only minor changes in elevation. The Las Hoces del Río Estenilla route near Los Alares leads to the remains of several abandoned watermills.
In several places, the Río Estenilla has cut narrow passages into the rock, forming small gorges. Tamujar vegetation grows around Los Alares within the Estena, Estenilla and Estomiza Rivers Nature Reserve. The reserve covers seven main watercourses, including the Estena, Estenilla and Estomiza. On the route near Los Alares, you may spot red deer, roe deer and wild boar, as well as otters, European pond turtles and Spanish pond turtles. The large birds of prey mentioned in the area include Spanish imperial eagles, short-toed snake eagles, griffon vultures, cinereous vultures and red kites.
Landscape and regional setting
The Raña de Anchuras geological site is of geomorphological and landscape interest. One of its three sections is Los Alares: it is the largest and reaches a maximum length of up to 21 kilometres. This figure refers to the geological section, not the PR-TO 48, whose circular route is 11.8 kilometres long.
Los Alares lies in the foothills of the Montes de Toledo and very close to Cabañeros National Park. The PR-TO 48 lies within the park’s socioeconomic area of influence. These are two different regional connections: the location of Los Alares and the classification of the hiking trail.
Village character and history
There is a small square with a fountain in the centre of Los Alares. The village has a uniform vernacular architectural style, with buildings constructed from flat slate stones. The Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. del Pilar is another specific feature of the village: it was blessed in 1889.
On 12 October, festivals are held in Los Alares in honour of the Virgen del Pilar. Together with the fountain square and slate architecture, this offers a distinct perspective on the village alongside its routes and river landscape.
When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the route features along the Río Estenilla and the details of the village centre. Which aspect of Los Alares takes precedence for you can be determined by the specific trail, landscape and village-character features.
