Gamonal combines its cultural and festival traditions with distinctive historic landmarks. Two annual dates in February are particularly useful for planning your trip: Las Candelas on February 2 and La Función de la Iglesia on February 27. The history of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Purificación offers another way to discover the town; local traditions and named landmarks add to the picture. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival day, you can first choose between the two events and then include other historic sites in your plans.

La Soldadesca and the Festival Days

La Soldadesca is protected as intangible Bien de Interés Cultural; the regional protection designation was made in 2024. Plaza de las Cruces is the central venue for its celebrations and is also included in this protection designation. The tradition is therefore associated both with a specific festival venue in Gamonal and with regionally recognized heritage protection.

Las Candelas is celebrated every year on February 2 in honor of Gamonal’s patron saint, the Virgen de la Purificación. The celebration begins with a procession carrying the patron saint through the town’s streets. The annual La Función de la Iglesia follows on February 27. It commemorates the collapse of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Purificación in 1900 and also includes a procession of the Virgen de la Purificación through Gamonal. The two dates therefore mark different occasions: Las Candelas is dedicated to the patron saint, while La Función commemorates the historic event of 1900.

La Soldadesca also plays a particularly important role in Gamonal’s Carnival and at the Mondas festival in Talavera de la Reina. Gamonal takes part in the Mondas procession with a float decorated with aromatic herbs and flags and pulled by two rams. The annual calendar thus features both the February dates in Gamonal and participation in the procession in Talavera de la Reina as distinct cultural highlights.

Church and Local Landmarks

The Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de la Purificación, also known as Nuestra Señora de la Purificación, is a church built around 1580 in the Gothic-Renaissance style. It developed from a hermitage that may already have been built in 1512. When considering its history, it is worth distinguishing between the dates: around 1580 refers to the church, while 1512 is only a possible construction date for the earlier hermitage.

Named local landmarks also include Las Pilas, a traditional washing place dating from the 19th century, and Las Tres Cruces, a landmark at the entrance to Gamonal. The similar names refer to different places: Plaza de las Cruces is the central venue for La Soldadesca celebrations, while Las Tres Cruces is the landmark at the town entrance. This distinction is useful when including these names in your travel plans.

Cruz del Niño is a large stone bearing a cross, located in the Alcor y Berrocal area. Local tradition associates the stone with the story of a child killed by wolves. Along with the washing place and the two named crosses, it offers a different way to explore local history than the church’s dated architecture: here, the focus is on a traditional story and specific place names.

Getting There from Talavera de la Reina

One possible route from Talavera de la Reina to Gamonal follows the A-5 to exit 128, then the Ctra. Alberche to C. Botica. The stated journey time is about 15 minutes and may vary depending on traffic. Treat this as a rough guide rather than a fixed journey time. This route describes one possible way to get there, not the only required route.
