Torrejón del Rey: Church, Landscape and Festivities
Accommodation in Torrejón del Rey
For a stay in Torrejón del Rey, three specific themes can help guide your plans: the building history of the Iglesia de San Julián y Santa Basilisa, the TM068 geological site, “Captura fluvial del Camarmilla por el Torote,” and local celebrations. Architecture, hiking and festive culture each offer a different focus. This lets you decide which theme you want your trip to revolve around.
The church and its building history
The Iglesia de San Julián y Santa Basilisa was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) on 8 July 1992. The tower was already in place before the nave was added to it; at that time, the tower served as the church bell tower. The present west portal was built by Pedro de la Bodega between 1540 and 1543.
The building history therefore offers two different ways of establishing chronology: the relative sequence of the tower and nave, and the precise dating of the portal. If you are interested in historic architecture, the church offers specific structural features through which you can trace these different dates.
Geology and hiking
The TM068 geological site, “Captura fluvial del Camarmilla por el Torote,” is located in the municipality of Torrejón del Rey and is of geomorphological interest. The river capture can be observed both on a very small scale and in detail.
A path leads north from the N-320 at kilometre 305.5; the site can be observed and explored in its entirety from this path. As it is an unpaved road, you should check conditions locally. Torrejón del Rey also has natural areas and trails suitable for hiking in accessible surroundings.
This gives you two distinct ways to enjoy nature during your stay: hiking in the municipality’s natural areas and along its trails, or exploring the geological feature of TM068. You can decide whether you would prefer to connect with nature through hiking in general or focus specifically on the geological site.
Festivities in Torrejón del Rey
The Cofradía organizes La Rueda every year. Participants walk through the streets of the municipality together with the musicians, collecting various products, items and gifts from house to house in wicker baskets. The tradition thus combines a procession with the collection of offerings.
After the mass in honour of deceased members of the brotherhood, the collected products, items and gifts are auctioned in the Plaza Mayor, in front of the church. The auction is part of the celebration and takes place after the mass.
The 2026 festivities in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Socorro include a procession. The Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo is also among the local celebrations in Torrejón del Rey.
The difference in timing is useful when planning your trip: La Rueda is organized every year, while the procession is part of the programme for the 2026 festivities. If you want to plan your stay around a celebration, check the dates for the relevant edition.
