Mondéjar offers a range of reasons to stay: Renaissance architecture, a cave with Passion scenes, the Vía Verde del Tajuña and regional wine culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Mondéjar, these highlights can help you choose your travel dates. The town can be reached via the CM-2004 road; check road conditions before setting off.

Renaissance and historic buildings

The Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena has been designated a historic-artistic monument since 1931. Built in the early 16th century, it is one of the earliest examples of the Spanish Renaissance. The church houses an exact copy of a 16th-century altarpiece by Alonso de Covarrubias, executed by Juan Correa de Vivar, who came from Granada. A visit therefore combines the church’s architecture with a specific example of its art history.

The Convento de San Antonio is also one of the town’s notable historic buildings. It is considered one of the oldest surviving examples of the Plateresque style in Spain and was declared a national monument in 1921. The ruins preserve the church’s Plateresque portal, a work by Renaissance architect Lorenzo Vázquez. The Ermita de San Sebastián was built in the early 16th century at the expense of the first Marqués de Mondéjar.

Cave and religious art

The Cueva de los Judíos is a 16th-century cave. Its decoration includes twelve Passion scenes and 75 life-size polychrome stucco sculptures that are more than 450 years old. Guided visits last 40 minutes. The Museo Parroquial Mendocino presents a permanent exhibition of significant 16th-century artworks in the upper choir of the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena. A free audio guide, accessible via QR codes, is included with the museum visit. Check access arrangements for the cave and museum before your trip.

Local history in everyday life

Mondéjar’s bullring was built in 1915 using dressed stones from the Convento de San Antonio. Two washhouses point to other aspects of the town’s history: the Lavadero del Espinar was once an important meeting place for local women, and its washing area is covered. The restored Lavadero del Pilar invites visitors to spend time in the surroundings and listen to the water.

Vía Verde and landscape

The Vía Verde del Tajuña connects Mondéjar with Ambite. The 10-kilometre section runs through the Alcarria landscape in the Autonomous Community of Madrid and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. Several stone viaducts define this section. The route also passes through an oak forest, where a varied birdlife can be heard. One of the three orchid species found there can also be spotted; however, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on every visit. Check the route’s condition and access before your trip.

Cuisine and wine from Mondéjar

Local cuisine includes traditionally prepared lamb, the famous cheese of Mondéjar and local wines that reflect the character of the Alcarria. The D.O. Mondéjar production area covers a total of 2,100 hectares, of which 1,423 hectares lie within the municipality of Mondéjar. This offers a sense of the regional wine culture through both its products and the extent of its growing area.

September festivities

The festivities in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario are celebrated from 13 to 18 September and are recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest. Dates and programmes may vary from year to year. On 13 September, a procession makes its way from the Ermita de San Sebastián to the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena; near the chapel, it begins with a lengthy sequence of mortar fireworks. The festivities also include the Correpiés, in which pyrotechnics are set off along the ground and into the sky. This tradition was brought from Paterna in 1921. If you would like to plan your trip around the festivities, check the dates for the relevant year.
