Almiruete: Carnival Tradition, Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Almiruete
Almiruete combines local history, the Carnival of the Botargas and Mascaritas, and several hiking routes. When looking for a hotel in Almiruete, the occasion can shape the timing of your trip: Route 4 is recommended in every season, while the carnival celebration takes place each year on Carnival Saturday, with its date changing according to the carnival calendar. An interest in culture and plans for hiking offer different focal points for your stay.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Route 4, “From Almiruete to Tamajón,” is 13.2 kilometers long; it is estimated to take about four to four and a half hours and is rated as easy. You can start in Almiruete, and it is a convenient linear out-and-back route with very little change in elevation. Before reaching Almiruete, the route passes through a forest of junipers and savin junipers. The route is recommended in every season; check trail conditions before setting out.
Another option is the GR-60 stage from Valverde de los Arroyos to Almiruete. It passes through forests of oaks and Pyrenean oaks. The two routes offer different highlights: for Route 4, the estimated duration and distance are useful for planning, while the GR-60 stage is characterized by its stated start and end points and its woodland route.
The village’s location also shapes its landscape: Almiruete lies on a wooded slope, and the built-up area blends into its surroundings. Traditional architecture and materials from the surrounding area are part of its character. This combination of the built environment and landscape offers a different way to experience the destination than the hiking trails.
Church, Architecture and Local History
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is in the upper part of Almiruete and is a Romanesque church. Its original building dates from between the late 12th and early 13th centuries; it was later altered in the 16th century. Its distinctive architectural features include a triangular bell gable and a portico. Its construction date, later alterations, and two distinctive features give the church a clearly defined historical and architectural significance.
Another historic structure is the Fuente Vieja. The fountain dates from 1794 and is located in the Plaza del Pilar in the upper part of Almiruete. Together with the church, it points to different aspects of local history: here, a dated fountain; there, a Romanesque building with later alterations and distinctive architectural features.
Carnival and Museum
Almiruete is a district of Tamajón in the Comarca de la Arquitectura Negra de Guadalajara. The Carnival of the Botargas and Mascaritas takes place there each year on Carnival Saturday; the exact date varies according to the carnival calendar. The celebration is classified as a festival of provincial tourist interest. If you are planning a visit around the festival, check that year’s program.
The celebration includes different activities by the two groups: the Botargas throw fluff from cattails (espadaña), while the Mascaritas throw confetti. They then remove their masks and begin dancing to the dulzaina. These details describe what happens during the celebration without reducing the carnival to its masks or its date.
The Centro de Interpretación del Carnaval de Almiruete, also known as the Museo de Botargas y Mascaritas, is located in the village square. Its permanent exhibition displays masks and costumes from several generations and presents the history, origins, and symbolism of the celebration outside the carnival period too. The masks on display include some that were once carved from wood and often depict rural or pastoral motifs. Confirm the current visitor arrangements locally before visiting the museum.
