Albalate de Zorita: Trails, History and Festivals
Accommodation in Albalate De Zorita
Albalate de Zorita brings together hiking routes, historic buildings and festivals. If you are planning a stay, different questions may shape your choice: Which route fits your schedule, which building’s history would you like to learn more about, and is there an event date that matters for your trip?
Choose hiking trails by duration and focus
The Cerro del Poste circular trail starts and ends in Parque Pepe Loeches. It is 6.93 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of two hours. The route reaches an elevation of 950 metres and offers views of Albalate de Zorita, the Sierra de Altomira and the Tagus Valley.
The Cerro de la Ermita circular trail has a shorter estimated duration: it starts and ends at Plaza del Coso, is 3.8 kilometres long and takes an estimated one hour and ten minutes. Along the way, it passes the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the Fuente de la Villa and the Iglesia de San Andrés. The two loops can therefore be distinguished by their stated lengths and estimated durations.
The Ruta de la Vega has different features. It has only gentle inclines and is considered a comfortable hiking trail suitable for children. The Miravalles trail, in turn, leads to the viewpoint in the Miravalles area. Extensive pine forests offer views over the Tagus Valley. The trails described therefore differ both in the time information available and in their stated landscape and route focuses.
Architectural history in the town
The Fuente de la Villa, also known as the Fuente de los Trece Caños, is documented as far back as 1557 and is considered one of the best-known symbols of Albalate de Zorita. Its present structure dates from the 17th century, is designed in the Renaissance style and was extended in the early 20th century. Its two names and different construction phases give the fountain its own historical context.
Construction of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios began in 1655 and was probably completed in 1676. The chapel is a rectangular Baroque building with a Herrerian portal. The Iglesia de San Andrés, by contrast, is a Gothic church dating from the late 15th century. The revered Cruz del Perro, patron saint of Albalate de Zorita, is housed in the Capilla de Santa Cruz.
The ruins of the Ermita de Cubillas are also among the historic sites: they are located in the cemetery, a short distance from the town. Together with the buildings at Cerro de la Ermita, these sites show different facets of local architectural history, from Gothic church construction to Baroque forms.
Festivals and cultural events
The Pasión Viviente takes place on the afternoon of Holy Saturday. In 13 scenes, performers act out the Passion of Jesus. The festival is staged every year and is recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date of Holy Saturday for the relevant year.
On 3 February, the feast day of San Blas, the saint is accompanied in a procession after the main Mass. The celebration includes a dance by the Botargas and dancers, as well as praises to the saint recited to the accompaniment of drums and large castanets. The Muestra Folk has been held in Albalate de Zorita since 1998. It combines traditional music with tastings, crafts, exhibitions, games for children, and a gathering of the Botargas and dancers.
