Fuente-Alamo: Archaeology, Festivals and Nature
Accommodation in Fuente-Alamo
Fuente-Alamo brings together archaeological evidence, recurring festivals and experiences in nature. These themes offer different ways to shape your travel plans: you can plan your stay around architectural and settlement history, a festival date, or walks and time outdoors. If you are looking for a hotel, it is worth considering your preferred travel dates alongside the activities that interest you.
Archaeology and Architectural History
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Dionisio Areopagita is a neoclassical church dating from the 18th century. Fuente-Alamo also has open-air archaeological sites from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, as well as from Iberian and Roman times. These different periods give the archaeological heritage a broad timespan. Fortaleza is an Iberian oppidum with a large, L-shaped wall; in antiquity, the site was called “Magneton.” Here, the distinctive shape of the wall and the site’s early name are the focus.
Festivals and Dates Throughout the Year
The Fiestas Patronales de San Dionisio Areopagita honor the patron saint and take place from October 8 to 12. Another annual date is San Marcos on April 25, celebrated with a gathering lasting two to three days in the El Cotico area. Traditionally, it includes hornazo, a sweet pastry, and boiled eggs. On the evening of August 14, the Baile de los Gazpachos takes place at the Dionisio El Chaparro football ground. Gazpachos Manchegos, a typical local dish, are cooked over a wood fire, and there is also a gazpacho competition.
Semana Santa also features in the festival calendar. The Hermandad de Jesús Nazareno, the Hermandad de La Dolorosa and the Hermandad de San Juan take part. The processions include the Good Friday meeting procession and the Easter Sunday procession celebrating the Resurrection. The Feria de Tradiciones takes place in May, and Semana Cultural in the first half of August. The latter combines leisure and sports activities with craft workshops, theatre performances, concerts, dance and other events. If you are planning to visit for a particular festival, check the current event dates before making your plans.
Tapas, Crafts and Wine
The Feria de Tradiciones combines a traditional market featuring handicrafts with demonstrations of craftwork; tastings are also part of the event. The Ruta de la Tapa has a different focus: it usually takes place in March over two consecutive weekends. You can sample tapas and wines at various venues. At Enoturismo Mainetes, the Ruta del Vino also includes a visit to an ethnographic museum and a wine museum. This means events, regional food and museum visits can each offer a different focus for your stay.
Landscape, Walks and Nature
Fuente-Alamo lies at the foot of gentle hills and is surrounded by almond trees and pine groves. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and family walks, and is also suitable for birdwatching. At Parque del Cerrico Billote, a botanical educational trail provides information about the local flora. The park is north of the town and can be reached via a footpath that passes underneath the bypass. There is also a designated picnic area. Nature watching, a walking route and information about plants offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
Cycling and Other Activities
A popular running race takes place in Fuente-Alamo in summer; there is also a mountain biking event in summer as part of the Albacete provincial circuit. The Fuente-Alamo mountain biking circuit has a long route of 40.4 kilometres and a short route of 23.1 kilometres. Comparing these two distances gives you a concrete starting point when choosing a route for your plans. These running and cycling events add sporting dates to the opportunities for hiking and family walks.
