Santibáñez offers several points of interest for a stay, including its Church of San Juan Bautista, the Molino Harinero grain mill and its connection with the Pisueña landscape.

The church and historic traces

The Church of San Juan Bautista de Santibáñez dates from the 16th century; its tower was completed in the 17th century. The original main altarpiece, dating from the 18th century, has an almost circular entablature. The three dates mark distinct phases of construction: the church’s origins, the completion of the tower and the later design of the altarpiece. The entablature, the horizontal architectural element at the top, is a specific feature of the altarpiece’s design.

Another historical trace is the school in Santibáñez de Carriedo. Francisco Pérez Venero funded its construction in 1927. The school was equipped with educational materials and additional services in keeping with the modern pedagogical movements of its time. Together with the church, this site offers a second perspective on the history of Santibáñez de Carriedo, this time on the development of education.

The Molino Harinero grain mill

The more than 200-year-old Molino Harinero de Santibáñez is a rodezno-type watermill. Its horizontal waterwheel is powered by the River Junquera. The mill is considered possibly one of the largest and most sophisticated watermills in Cantabria; this regional classification is expressly presented as a possibility. A note from 2004 described the millrace and tailrace as being in good condition. The mill’s technical design and connection to the river give it a different historical focus from the church’s construction history.

Landscape in the municipality of Villacarriedo

In the upper Pisueña basin of Villacarriedo, hay meadows dotted with Pasiego huts shape the landscape. Numerous streams add to the municipality’s rivers and fish resources. The course of the Pisueña through Villacarriedo is also geographically classified: it forms part of the Río Pas Site of Community Importance in the Natura 2000 network. These landscape details refer to Villacarriedo and provide a distinct regional setting alongside Santibáñez’s historical themes.

Horse riding and routes

A 2017 association listing gives the address of the private Centro Ecuestre Santibáñez, run by Depolur, S.L., as Barrio Villalaz 11, 39649 Santibáñez–Villacarriedo, Cantabria. It lists equestrian activities as the main activity, with lessons, competitions, riding camps and horse boarding. The listing describes an approximately 1 km-long riding and cantering track, averaging 5 m in width, on the property at the edge of the Pisueña and Junquera rivers, reserved exclusively for horses. Check whether access and services are currently available before setting out.

The “Santibáñez – Vuelta al valle del Pisueña” mountain bike route is a loop starting and ending in Santibáñez de Carriedo. As navigation details should be checked before departure, treat it as a separate part of your planning, distinct from the horse track. Another historical sporting connection is the XXXVII Memorial Aurelio González, held at the bowling alley on the El Pilar estate in Santibáñez.
