Puente Avios brings together historic religious buildings and connections to different routes. The church, the Chapel of Santa LucĂa and the Casa y Capilla de los QuirĂłs offer different historical points of interest; there is also a cycling route and pilgrimage paths. Route information varies by stage, place names and total loop distance, while two recurring feast days mark the year.

Pilgrimage paths and a circular cycling route

Puente Avios lies on stage ES30a-01a of the Camino del Besaya – Calzada romana, which runs from Suances to Santillana del Mar. Quiet paths towards Camplengo also follow the historic pilgrimage route from Ongayo to Santillana del Mar on the way to Santiago. Both Camino connections name Santillana del Mar as the destination, but give different starting points: Suances and Ongayo. These place names therefore provide a practical guide to the historic route.

The Ruta Circular Ciclable de Suances offers a different way to find your bearings: it passes through Puente Avios and is 38 kilometres long in total. This is the distance for the entire circular route, not just a section within the village. The different ways of planning a journey are therefore distinct: for the pilgrimage paths, the stage and place names are useful; for the circular cycling route, the stated total distance is the key detail.

Gothic features of the church

The church of Puente Avios was rebuilt in a single building campaign in 1664. Its four distinctly Gothic features are a diagonally aligned buttress, the octagonal chancel bay, a three-arched bell gable in place of a tower, and a vault with concave ribs. These terms refer to different parts of the building: the buttress is a supporting element, the chancel bay belongs to the chancel, and the ribs describe the shape of the vault. The date and architectural features offer two different ways to understand the church’s architecture.

Santa LucĂa and the QuirĂłs complex

The Chapel of Santa Lucía has several historical timeframes. Its dedication dates back to the Middle Ages; it was built around 1664 next to the Quirós house. The chapel was completely reconstructed in the 20th century, and only its overall structure has survived in its original form. The Casa y Capilla de los Quirós in Puente Avios dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and is in poor condition. The dates refer to different aspects: the chapel’s dedication, construction and reconstruction, and the building period of the Quirós complex.

Feast dates throughout the year

Two recurring feast days provide specific dates to help you plan your trip. In Puente Avios, the Virgen del Rosario is celebrated on the last Saturday in August, and Santa LucĂa on 13 December. The August celebration is tied to a day of the week, while the December celebration falls on a fixed calendar date. If one of the feasts is the reason for your trip, check the exact event date in advance.
