Pedreña: Culture, Golf and Water Sports
Accommodation in Pedreña
You can get to know Pedreña through its cultural history and its various connections to the water. The town is shaped by such features as the Iglesia de San Pedro, a medieval silver hoard and the work of the Pedreñeras. Golf history and water sports also offer their own points of interest when planning your stay and looking for a hotel in Pedreña.
Cultural History and Art in Pedreña
The Iglesia de San Pedro dates from the 1950s and replaced an earlier church that was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. This marks two clearly distinct historical periods: the destruction of the previous building and the construction of the present church. Inside are murals, including a work by Fernando Calderón. The building’s history and its art each give the church its own cultural significance.
The Casa de los Padres Jesuitas is another part of the town’s history. Two coats of arms are preserved there, associated with the Rubalcaba and Portillo families. The heraldry provides a different focus from the murals in the Iglesia de San Pedro: here, the preserved family crests take centre stage.
Another historical connection is the “Tesorillo Altomedieval de Ambojo,” a silver hoard discovered in Pedreña. Its coins date from the 11th and 12th centuries; in 2002, the hoard was designated an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The coins are held at the MUPAC in Santander.
The name Pedreñeras refers to the women of the town who gather shellfish, especially Venus clams and razor clams. At low tide, the sandbanks in the southern part of the bay are exposed and are associated with this activity. The low tide, this part of the bay and the shellfish species give the subject a specific local connection. This adds an activity linked to the landscape of the bay to the architectural and archaeological aspects.
Golf History and Activities on the Water
Real Golf de Pedreña was founded on 29 December 1928 and was formerly known as Real Club de Pedreña. Its founding date places the golf club in the town’s history. When planning your trip, you can distinguish this historical connection from today’s activities on the water: the former tells the story of the club’s past, while the nautical offerings appeal to other interests.
At the Centro de Actividades Náuticas in Pedreña, you can learn how to use a kayak, a windsurfing board and a catamaran. Buceo Pedreña has facilities right by the water in the harbour area. The two details have different focuses: the nautical centre offers instruction in using three watercraft, while Buceo Pedreña is described in terms of its harbour-side location. Check the operators’ current information before your trip.
A boat trip on the Río Cubas with Los Reginas includes Pedreña, the Golf de Pedreña and the mouth of the Río Miera along its route. It brings together three different local and landscape features. If you plan to include the trip in your stay, check departure times and conditions in advance, as they may change.
