During a stay in Liendo, you can focus on nature, the coast or cultural heritage. Monte Candina, Playa de San Julián, the Camino de Santiago de la Costa and the Arboreto de Liendo offer different ways to get to know the region.

Coastal Landscape and Geology

The Diapiro de Liendo is listed in the National Inventory of Geological Sites of Interest. The Monte Candina massif rises above the coast, culminating at the 472-metre-high rocky peak of Solpico. Its cliffs are home to the only maritime colony of griffon vultures in northern Spain. Loose fossils and fossils embedded in the rock, from marine shells, can be seen around Peña Solpico. Geological formations, fossils and the vulture colony offer different nature-related points of interest during a stay in Liendo.

On the north side of Monte Candina are the Ojos del Demonio: two arches carved into the rock with views of the Cantabrian Sea. The 7.3-kilometre circular hike to the Ojos del Diablo starts in Sonabia and passes through karst terrain. The ascent is steep and the route crosses rocky ground; hiking boots and a good level of physical fitness are required. Planning therefore involves more than just the distance: the terrain and challenging ascent should also be taken into account. Check route conditions before setting out.

Playa de San Julián is suitable for surfing. A footpath leads from Barrio Villanueva to the coast; you can leave your vehicle in an open area or car park. If you are planning a visit to the beach, take this access route into account and check local conditions before setting out.

Arboretum and Forest Knowledge

For a different focus, visit the Arboreto de Liendo. Its main entrance is beside the N-634, after you leave Liendo in the direction of Bilbao. Each of the arboretum’s gardens represents a continent and showcases characteristic trees from different parts of the world. An interpretive tour introduces significant tree species, covering their origins, characteristics, traditional uses and distinctive features. A self-guided tour is also available.

The Centro de Interpretación del Bosque uses information panels to present various aspects of forests. It is located in the Ermita de San Roque, a 16th-century building that was formerly a pilgrims’ hospital. Guided visits to the Arboreto and the Centro are available for individuals, families, schools and other groups. As booking arrangements may change, check them before arranging a guided visit.

Churches, Pilgrimage Route and Traditions

The Ermita de San Andrés in Barrio Villaviad dates from the 16th century and was restored in 1990. A corbel sculpture at the portal points to its connection with the Way of St. James. The late Romanesque Ermita de San Julián is now a ruin; its construction is dated to the late 12th or early 13th century. The two chapels therefore differ both in their building histories and in their present condition.

The Camino de Santiago de la Costa passes through Liendo via Iseca Nueva and Sopeña to the parish church in Barrio Hazas. Liendo’s church was completed in the 18th century. The stately Casona de Albo in Iseca Vieja is also considered an example of the region’s artistic heritage. Visitors interested in religious architectural history can explore these sites in the context of the pilgrimage route.

Festivals are held in Liendo’s districts throughout the year, especially in August. They include religious celebrations in honour of patron saints or the local Virgin, as well as secular festivities. The programme may vary. If you would like to plan your travel dates around a festival, check the specific dates in advance.
