If you’re looking for hotels in Gornazo, you can plan your trip around two interests: the local history surrounding San Nicolás or routes with archaeological and historical points of interest. The valley landscape adds a topographical perspective to the cultural side. The focus is on specific buildings, historical connections and routes with different layouts.

Valley, Routes and Local History

Gornazo lies in a valley crossed by the Briñas and Troncón streams. Part of the terrain rises towards the Sierra de Cumbreo. The origins of the settlement are also linked to a route: Gornazo developed around San Nicolás Church, on a historic route towards Santillana.

The historical livelihoods in Gornazo included growing maize, beans, wheat and potatoes, as well as raising cattle and sheep. This agricultural activity adds a picture of residents’ former daily lives to the local history.

Church and Buildings

The old San Nicolás Church was restored and extended in the 17th century. Gornazo Church is protected as a “Building of Interest” in protection category 1. Its features include a single-nave layout, a bell gable, an entrance porch and a polygonal apse. The nave refers to the main space; the gable, entrance porch and apse are other architectural elements that shape the building.

Gornazo’s entrance portal is protected as a memorial portal in protection category 1 and has an arch with pilasters. The designation “memorial portal” refers to its commemorative function; the arch and pilasters describe its design.

Three Routes with Different Destinations

The “CASTRO DEL CUETO” route is a circular trail between Gornazo and Mogro that leads to the remains of an ancient Cantabrian hillfort.

“MOGRO GORNAZO” follows the Camino Histórico del Norte from Mogro to San Nicolás de Bari Church in Gornazo. The “RUTA POR EL INTERIOR” starts beside Gornazo railway station and returns to Gornazo. The routes described therefore differ in their points of interest: archaeological remains, the church on the historic route, or the railway station as a starting point, with a return to the village.
