Frama: Trails, Heritage and Landscape
Accommodation in Frama
When planning a stay in Frama, you can focus on different things: historic routes, buildings in Frama and Lubayo, or the landscape of the Picos de Europa. The route descriptions give specific landmarks, from Potes via Ojedo and Valverde to the squares in Frama and Valverde. This lets you combine finding your way around with an interest in local history and architecture.
Trails from Potes and along the Bullón
The historic trail from Potes to Frama formed part of the Ruta Lebaniega. It connected with the coastal route from Santiago de Compostela, which is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest. This connection to the wider regional route is also important for understanding the trail. Signposting and trail conditions may change. Check local information before setting out.
On the tourist route from Potes to Puerto de Piedras Luengas, Frama is the first village reached after the initial stretch via Ojedo. Another landmark is provided by the old trail from Potes: it passes through the Valverde district before reaching Frama. Ojedo and Valverde therefore mark different reference points in the two route descriptions.
A short, easy route starts at the Plaza in Frama and follows the River Bullón to the Cabariezo district. From there, a path near the river continues to the lower district of Cabezón de Liébana. Whether you are considering a short walk or want to extend your route, there are different sections to choose from: the stretch along the Bullón to Cabariezo and the continuation along the riverbank to Cabezón. Check trail conditions before setting out.
From the Plaza de Valverde, a winding path runs through the Quintana area along the Arroyo Quintana to Lubayo. The route from the Plaza de Frama follows the Bullón to Cabariezo and continues along a path near the river to the lower district of Cabezón de Liébana. The different starting points and destinations can help you choose the route that best suits your plans.
Local History and Buildings
Near the Lubayo district are the remains of the former Monastery of Santa María, which once dominated the valley. On the edge of Lubayo is also the Ermita de San Andrés, a simple chapel attached to a house. These two sites represent different aspects of local architectural history.
Frama is mentioned as early as 957 in the medieval cartularies of Santa María de Piasca and Santo Toribio. Another specific detail can be found on the entrance portal of the church in Frama: it has round-arched arcades, and one archivolt is decorated with 34 large diamond points. An archivolt is a decorative element that follows the curve of an arch. The number and form of the ornament make the description of the portal particularly vivid, without requiring it to be attributed to any specific architectural style.
Landscape, Vineyards and Festival Date
Along the trail from Lubayo towards Valverde are small vineyards with carefully tended vines on wire trellises; they are in full production. Frama also offers views of the Picos de Europa landscape. Alongside the historic trails and buildings, agriculture and scenery are therefore also themes to consider when planning your trip.
The “San Bartolo” festival is listed for 24 August in the square in Valverde, where there is a bandstand. If you want to plan your trip around it, check in advance whether the festival will take place in your travel year and what programme is planned.
