El Tejo can be explored through its landscapes, architectural history and practical travel routes. Parts of its territory include the Oyambre Dunes and the Marisma de Zapedo; a road leads up to the Church of Santa María.

Dunes, Marshland and Beach Views

The Oyambre Dunes and the Marisma de Zapedo represent two distinct types of landscape, each of which lies partly within El Tejo. El Tejo also offers views of Playa de Oyambre.

The Church of Santa María and Its History

The Church of Santa María de El Tejo stands on the site of a former monastery of the Premonstratensian Order of Saint Norbert. In the 12th century, King Alfonso VIII granted the order lands and rights in the area. The church’s location is therefore connected to a clearly defined medieval history.

The church is one of the few surviving examples of Romanesque architecture in the Saja Nansa region. Its south wall preserves Romanesque corbels beneath the cornice and a window in the late Romanesque style with a checkerboard decoration.

Getting to the Church

Take the western coastal road, the CA-131, from Comillas towards San Vicente de la Barquera to reach the church. At the entrance to Oyambre Natural Park, opposite the marshland of the Ría de La Rabia, the CA-363 branches off and climbs up to the church. Check local access before setting out.

Golf, SUP and Surfing

Campo Club de Golf Oyambre is located in El Tejo and has nine holes and a par of 57. The number of holes and par give you clear details for assessing the golf facilities. Check current operating and access conditions in advance.

Oyambre Surf offers two-hour SUP lessons on the waters of the Ría de Oyambre. More experienced participants can also ride waves at sea. The two-hour surf lessons take place on the beaches of Oyambre and Merón in San Vicente de la Barquera; groups are small and organised by skill level. Both SUP and surfing are listed as two-hour activities. When comparing them, the water setting and lesson format differ: SUP on the Ría, and surfing on the beaches in small groups organised by skill level.

The Camino del Norte Through El Tejo

On the stage from Comillas to Unquera, the Camino del Norte passes through El Tejo, the Ría de la Rabia and Oyambre Natural Park. The stage is rural in character, with a succession of ascents and descents. Check the current route markers before setting out.
