Discover Cartes
Accommodation in Cartes
Cartes combines a preserved medieval town layout with a history as a route connecting the Castilian hinterland with the Cantabrian coast. It also features historic mills, the Church of Santa María in Yermo, and the Vía Verde del Besaya. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: architecture and local history, a mill route, activities along the greenway, or the San Roque festival. Which of these matters most to you depends on what you would like to discover during your stay.
Historic Street Layout and Buildings
The Villa de Cartes has preserved its original medieval layout along a main street. This street follows the former route of the Camino Real. The town developed along the route from the Meseta plateau to the Cantabrian coast, connecting Castile with the sea via the Besaya. The town’s history and the connection between inland areas and the coast are thus reflected in the same historic route structure.
The Conjunto Histórico de Cartes in the province of Cantabria is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Historic Complex category; it was designated on March 29, 1985. The complex includes Cantabrian manor houses dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Several façades feature carved coats of arms. It is crowned by a rectangular Gothic tower, crossed by two large pointed arches. The slots for the portcullises can still be seen in the tower. Together, the street layout, houses, and tower provide tangible architectural points of reference for the town’s history.
The Iglesia de Santa María in Yermo is also one of the protected buildings in the municipality of Cartes. It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on July 4, 1930. Its protected surroundings border woodland, forested areas, meadows, and a local road. Rural paths and the route from Sierra Elsa cross the area. The church and its surroundings therefore offer their own connection to the locality, within a landscape shaped by these named boundaries and routes.
Mill Route and Preserved Traces
In Cartes, a route leads to eight mills, listed in Cantabria’s General Inventory of Cultural Heritage since 2003. Two of the mills are in different states of preservation. The Molino de La Aceña is located in Cartes and has been converted into a private residence. The stepped walls of the millpond beside the millrace, the water channels at the rear, and the outlet arch have been preserved. The former mill is therefore not described as a publicly accessible building; its historic mill structure can be discerned from these surviving features.
The Molino de La Fuente is located in the district of Ribero de Santiago de Cartes and is in ruins. Its three main walls still stand, and some traces of the hydraulic system have also survived. The millrace is filled in and concealed. Compared with La Aceña, this shows how varied the structural remains are among the mills: here, individual water-related features at a converted residence; there, walls and hydraulic traces at a ruin.
Vía Verde del Besaya and Travel Planning
The Vía Verde del Besaya passes through Cartes on the route from Suances to Barros, near Los Corrales de Buelna. The route is suitable for walkers, skaters, and cyclists, and includes both asphalt and compacted earth surfaces. This raises two specific questions for your planning: Which of these activities would you like to do, and which type of surface matters to you? As conditions can change, it is advisable to check local conditions before setting off.
The San Roque festival in Cartes is listed as a festival of local interest on August 16. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the program for the relevant year. The Villa de Cartes can be reached via National Road 611, south of Torrelavega. When planning, you can consider both your route and whether the historic town layout, the mills, or the Vía Verde should be the focus of your stay.
These themes can help you assess Cartes as a travel destination before looking for a hotel. If you are mainly interested in architectural history, the medieval street layout, manor houses, and Gothic tower take center stage. The mill route offers a different perspective on the cultural heritage; the Vía Verde connects Cartes with a route for walkers, skaters, and cyclists. Choose the focus that suits your travel plans, then look for hotels for your stay in Cartes.
