Valle: Palaces, Chapel and Cultural History
Accommodation in Valle
Valle is a rural settlement in inland Cantabria and is considered a mountain village with the typical features of this area. The history of the village is reflected in specific buildings and their functions: these include two palaces, a chapel, the Casa de Indiano de Federico Porres del Castillo, and the Escuelas de Valle. This cultural and historical perspective is complemented by the El Milagro festival and a section of the TravesĂa Valle–Mentera-Barruelo. This gives you several distinct points of interest to help you choose a destination, rather than simply classifying Valle as a rural place in general.
Palaces and their distinguishing features
The Palacio de Juan Fernández del Valle was completed in 1610 and is listed as an inventoried cultural asset in the General Inventory of Cantabria’s Cultural Heritage. This provides two distinct points of reference: an exact year for the completion of construction and a clear cultural designation for the building. If you are interested in historic architecture, you will find both a specific date and a connection to the cultural heritage inventory here.
The Palacio Zorrilla San MartĂn dates back to the 17th century. It includes a chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario and San Nicolás de Bari. Compared with the Palacio de Juan Fernández del Valle, the dating here is less precise: the Zorrilla is dated by century, while the other palace has a specific completion year. At the same time, the chapel’s dedication adds a religious detail. The two palaces are therefore distinguished by clearly identified aspects of their architectural history.
The Casa de Indiano de Federico Porres del Castillo was built in 1902 and has two facades decorated with verandas. Alongside the exact year of construction, an architectural feature shared by both facades is highlighted here. This gives it a different emphasis from the details about the palaces: with the Casa, you can consider the construction date and facade design together, without describing all the historic buildings in the same way.
Cultural center and El Milagro festival
The Escuelas de Valle were built around 1890 and currently serve as an interpretation center for the Indianos and as the village’s cultural center. This brings an approximate date together with two current cultural functions. Its dating differs from the exact construction years of 1610 and 1902; at the same time, its current use makes the Escuelas a cultural point of interest in their own right. If you would like to visit the building, check access in advance.
El Milagro is celebrated in Valle on September 3 and is known as a firmly rooted local tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check that year’s program in advance. This lets you coordinate your travel dates with the actual festival schedule, rather than treating the calendar date alone as a complete event plan.
A section of the trail along the RĂo AsĂłn
The TravesĂa Valle–Mentera-Barruelo starts in the village of Valle beside the Iglesia de San FĂ©lix. Its first section is about one kilometer long and follows the path along the banks of the RĂo AsĂłn. The approximate distance refers to this first section. For orientation, the route gives you a starting point and a specific course along the riverbank; this is different from the buildings and their history. If you are considering Valle for a hotel stay, its architecture, cultural venues, and this route section offer different points to consider when planning your trip.
