Correpoco combines local history and a variety of trails with a distinctive townscape. It lies on the Argoza River, a tributary of the Saja, and extends across three small districts on a sunny, south-facing slope. Examples of Cantabria’s montañes mountain architecture shape the town. If you are considering Correpoco as a travel destination, you can plan to explore its townscape, cultural heritage, and places of interest together.

Local History and Architecture

Correpoco was part of the historic Ruta de los Foramontanos. The Church of San Juan Bautista was built in the 16th century. It has a baptismal font in the Romanesque tradition, an original wooden coffered ceiling above the apse, and five altarpieces from the mid-18th century featuring folk-style imagery. The dates refer to different elements: the church was built in the 16th century, while the five altarpieces date from the mid-18th century. The Romanesque tradition characterizes the baptismal font.

Smaller features also contribute to the townscape: a movable stone in Correpoco’s Humilladero made it possible to collect alms left by walkers. The Fuente del Cristo is named after an old wayside cross of which it was once a part. Beyond Barrio de Abajo, there is a washhouse on the right-hand side of the path. Together with the church, these details offer different points of interest if you are interested in the town’s history and architecture.

Hike to LlendemozĂł and BTT Route

The hiking route from Correpoco to LlendemozĂł is a linear trail of low difficulty. Its round-trip distance is 7.30 kilometers, with an elevation difference of 30 meters. The route is suitable for any season. Before arriving in LlendemozĂł, the trail passes Pico del Cueto, which stands 836 meters high, and offers panoramic views of the Saja Valley along the way. There is a drinking water fountain at the starting point in Correpoco. Check it on site before setting out. Trail conditions and route details may change; take this into account when planning.

Nearby, in LlendemozĂł, stands the hermitage of San Antonio. The religious building dates from the 17th century and has a polychrome wooden coffered ceiling. A coffered ceiling divides a ceiling surface into individual panels; in San Juan Bautista, the original wooden structure is above the apse, while in San Antonio it is polychrome. So, along with views over the Saja Valley, the route also offers a specific architectural destination.

The Correpoco–Pozo Arbencias–Correpoco BTT route starts at Correpoco Town Hall and follows an old path through Saja-Besaya Natural Park. It runs alongside the river to the waterfalls of the Río Hormigas and Río Lodar; the Pozo de la Arbencia is on the Río Lodar. Check route conditions before setting off, as water levels can affect access.

Different details matter when choosing between the two routes: the route to LlendemozĂł is described by its round-trip distance, elevation difference, suitability by season, and panoramic views. The BTT loop focuses on its starting point at the town hall and destinations along the river and at the waterfalls. You can plan accordingly, depending on whether you want to explore Correpoco on foot, with views of LlendemozĂł and its hermitage, or cycle to the destinations along the rivers.
