When choosing a destination, Cañedo offers several clearly distinct historical points of interest: the Gothic church of Santa María, an inn dating from 1754, two heraldic houses, and a connection to the history of Soba during the Napoleonic Wars. The details range from architecture and art to local landmarks. This lets you plan your stay around the subject that interests you most and discover the different historical layers of the place.

Santa María: Architecture Spanning Several Centuries

The Gothic church of Santa María de Cañedo is a single-nave building with three bays and a flat-ended chancel. “Single-nave” describes a church with one main interior space; the three bays divide the building into sections. Together, these features provide a precise architectural classification and describe the church’s layout, not just its style.

A private chapel, founded by Juan Fernández de la Peña, was added on the Gospel side at the beginning of the 17th century. This gives the building’s history a specific date and personal connection. Its location on the Gospel side, approximate date, and founder each provide a different way of understanding the addition.

The main altarpiece also brings together elements from different periods. It is a Neoclassical work from the early 19th century and includes twelve oil-painted panels from an older altarpiece. A 14th-century Gothic statue of the Virgin stands in its central niche; the altarpiece also contains a Calvary group from the mid-16th century. The date of the altarpiece should therefore be distinguished from the dates when its individual elements were created.

In 1984, the main altarpiece and its paintings were restored by the Taller Itinerante de Restauración. This date adds a distinct chapter in the history of restoration to the sequence of architectural and art history.

Inn, Heraldic Houses, and Historical Connections

Cañedo is home to the historic inn Antigua Venta en el Camino de los Castellanos, dating from 1754. It is associated with the Camino de los Castellanos. The heraldic houses of La Peña and Zorrilla are further historical points of interest in the village. The inn and the heraldic houses differ both in name and in how they are connected to Cañedo’s history.

The historical context extends beyond the buildings: Cañedo is connected to the history of Soba during the Napoleonic Wars through Juan López Campillo’s use of the valley as a headquarters for attacks on French troops. This connection is part of the broader history of Soba and shifts the focus from the church’s specific architectural features.

Finding Your Way Around Cañedo

An old chestnut tree marks the boundary between the districts of Cañedo de Arriba and Cañado de Abajo. For road directions, the CA-664 is marked “Acceso a Cañedo.” The tree marks a boundary between two districts; the road sign is a separate point of reference for finding your way.

Another perspective can be found at the Las Cabas viewpoint on the road to Puerto de la Sía. From there, you can enjoy views of La Gándara, Cañedo, Quintana, and the rest of the municipality. La Gándara is about three kilometres from the viewpoint. This perspective differs from the art-historical view of Santa María: it takes in several named places and the municipality as a whole.

If you are choosing a destination primarily for its architectural and art history, Santa María offers the most extensive thematic focus. For finding your way around, the old chestnut tree, the road sign, and the view from Las Cabas provide different points of reference.
