Camaleño: Mountain Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Camaleño
Camaleño is part of the Picos de Europa National Park because of its ecological value. Mountain landscapes and nature meet pilgrimage routes and rural cultural heritage in the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel in Camaleño, choosing the focus of your stay first can help with planning your trip: viewpoints and trails, religious sites or the region’s history.
Nature and mountain landscapes
The Hayedo de Salvorón serves as a habitat and migration route for endangered species such as the brown bear, capercaillie and otter. The landscape also includes the Circo de Fuente Dé and the different vegetation zones on the slopes of Valdebaró. The cirque is a glacial and periglacial landform in the area of Camaleño and the Picos de Europa.
The slopes of Valdebaró are home to holm oak, Pyrenean oak and oak forests, as well as beech and birch stands. At higher elevations, these give way to subalpine shrubland and mountain pastures. As described, the landscape ranges from various types of forest to open areas at higher elevations.
Viewpoints around Fuente Dé
The Fuente Dé cable car covers an elevation difference of 753 metres: the lower station in Fuente Dé is at 1,094 metres, and the upper station at the Mirador del Cable is at 1,847 metres. The viewpoint is in the municipality of Camaleño, at the upper station and 800 metres from Fuente Dé. From there, you can see the upper Deva basin and nearby beech forests. As operating conditions for the cable car can vary depending on the weather and maintenance, check its current operating status before your visit.
The Mirador de Santo Toribio offers a different view. It is outside the national park, next to the Monasterio de Santo Toribio, and looks out over the south side of the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. The two viewpoints therefore offer different perspectives: the Mirador del Cable looks out over the upper Deva basin and nearby beech forests, while the Mirador de Santo Toribio overlooks the south side of the eastern massif.
Trails and pilgrimage destinations
Fuente Dé lies at the foot of the Picos de Europa; from there, you can reach the Puertos de Áliva. The area is frequently visited by day-trippers. Two routes highlight different aspects of the landscape: on the PR-PNPE 23 Ruta Horcados Rojos, the experience is shaped by high-altitude vegetation, rocky terrain with jagged peaks and alpine birds. The PR-PNPE 24 Ruta Puertos de Áliva passes through extensive mountain meadows between the central and eastern massifs, then through dense forests on the southern slope of Pico de Valdecoro.
The Camino Lebaniego also passes through Camaleño. This pilgrimage route runs between San Vicente de la Barquera and the Monasterio de Santo Toribio. This monastery in the municipality is a religious centre and pilgrimage destination, as well as one of four places worldwide where a Jubilee can be obtained; the other places named are Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela. Its church is Gothic in style, with Cistercian influences. The complex also includes the Baroque Lignum Crucis chapel.
Culture and regional history
Mogrovejo’s architectural heritage includes a medieval tower and an adjoining manor house. A group of burial mounds more than 3,000 years old is located near Peña de Oviedo. These sites provide different historical and architectural points of reference for exploring Camaleño’s cultural heritage.
The Museo de la Escuela Rural in Mogrovejo recreates a traditional school from the Liébana region and celebrates rural education. In Espinama, a village in the municipality, the Centro de Interpretación de la Montaña uses images and objects to explain life in the mountains of the Liébana region. The two attractions focus on different subjects: the history of rural schooling and life in the mountain region.
An annual event is the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Salud on 2 July. It is celebrated in a small chapel in the meadows of the Puertos de Áliva, at an altitude of about 1,500 metres. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the programme in advance, as some details may change.
