Barcenaciones: Cantabrian architecture, churches and walks
Accommodation in Barcenaciones
Barcenaciones is a rural ensemble of great ethnographic value that preserves traditional Cantabrian architecture. Numerous interesting buildings invite you to explore the village streets on foot. This brings together different themes during your stay: the architectural history of the churches, religious feast days and a walk along the Saja River. You can focus on what interests you most, whether that is architecture or also making time for a walk.
Traditional architecture and churches
The parish church of San Juan Bautista was rebuilt in the 17th century on the site of a medieval predecessor. In art-historical terms, it is classified as a Romanist work, completed around 1625. Its nave has two bays; the square main chapel has ribbed vaulting. An exterior staircase leads to the bell gable. A bay is a section of the nave, so the term “two-bay” describes its division into two sections.
The Chapel of San Benito is a 17th-century building with a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof. Its Neoclassical main altarpiece dates from the early 17th century. Visitors can therefore appreciate different aspects: the shape of the building and the art-historical design of the altarpiece.
Festivals throughout the year
The festival in honor of San Benito takes place every year on July 11; its program may vary. The Corpus Christi festival is also celebrated in June, with the exact date changing from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around either celebration, check the date and program for the relevant year.
In 2025, the San Benito livestock fair at Braña de San Benito was announced to feature cattle, sheep, goats, horses and donkeys. Dates and program details may vary. This adds an event focused on the named animal species to the religious feast days.
Walking along the Saja
The Paseo Las Escubias is a circular route along the Saja River, less than 2 kilometers long and taking approximately 30 minutes. Compared with exploring the streets at your own pace, it offers concrete reference points for a walk. The distance and duration are estimates, not exact figures.
The path is mostly paved, completely flat and has no significant inclines. Seasonal maintenance can affect its condition; check the trail conditions before setting out. The route passes through woodland with typical Cantabrian riverside vegetation, including poplars, laurels, hazel trees, oaks and chestnut trees. The vegetation is seasonal, so the landscape changes throughout the year.
Getting there
Barcenaciones is near the N-634 national road. The FEVE railway station in neighboring Golbardo is just under a kilometer from the village. If traveling by train is an option for you, check the current timetable and station information, as train services and station arrangements may change.
