A trip to Tijoco Bajo can be planned around several specific themes: historic buildings and local history, festivals, cheese and cooking experiences, and walking routes. Culture, food and drink, and outdoor activities offer different points of focus that you can combine according to your travel interests.

History and Local Features

El Granero is a historic building dating from the 18th century. It formerly served as a granary, grocery shop, stable and dance hall. Its former uses therefore ranged from storage and sales to stabling and a venue for dancing. Adeje Town Hall acquired and restored El Granero.

Era de la Pedrera is located in the town centre, next to an old dry-stone structure, and is an abandoned site. It has a diameter of 14 metres. Its stone paving is mostly well preserved, although there are traces of cement in some places. Era de la Pedrera offers wide-ranging views over Tijoco Bajo, the coast and the summit area.

The church and new square in Tijoco Bajo were inaugurated on 29 June 2016. This places an 18th-century building and a 2016 inauguration side by side as clearly distinct points in the town’s history.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Fiestas de Tijoco Bajo date back to 1965 and take place on the first weekend of July in honour of the Virgen del Carmen and San Antonio Abad. Their origins and recurring festival date provide two different points of reference: the year indicates when they began, while the July weekend can help with trip planning. If you would like to plan your trip around the Fiestas, check that year’s programme before travelling.

Cheese, Wine and Cooking Experiences

At QueserĂa Montesdeoca, one-hour visits take you around a working farm and an artisan cheese dairy in Tijoco Bajo. The tours include a cheese tasting and a tasting of wine from southern Tenerife. Booking and access arrangements may change, so check them before making plans.

La Cocina de Montesdeoca focuses on preparing almogrote hands-on. The cooking class is offered with a glass of wine from Tenerife and a cheese board featuring the dairy’s own cheeses; availability depends on booking. The formats are therefore different: at Quesería, the focus is on a tour and tastings, while at La Cocina, it is on cooking.

Compare Walking Routes

One walking route starts on Calle El Granero in Tijoco Bajo and follows the Camino Real towards Barranco de Erques. The circular route from Tijoco Bajo goes via Camino de Chacoroche and follows the Camino Real again on the return leg. Both routes include the Camino Real, but in different ways: the first route follows it towards Barranco de Erques, while the circular route uses it on the return leg. Check conditions and access before setting out.
