Los Silos: Heritage, Hiking Trails and Coast
Accommodation in Los Silos
In Los Silos, you can combine a stay featuring historic sights, hiking and coastal activities. The protected old town, the PR-TF 53 and recurring cultural events offer concrete points of reference for planning your trip. If you are looking for hotels in Los Silos, first consider which of these themes you would like to prioritise during your stay.
Heritage in the historic centre
The historic centre of Los Silos is a protected historic site. One of its defining landmarks is Plaza de la Luz, with its colourful gardens. It is considered a historic and popular landmark of the town. The plaza offers a starting point for discovering the history and townscape of Los Silos.
The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Luz dates from the mid-to-late 16th century. Its Neo-Gothic façade, with a central bell tower, was added later. The church houses historic religious images, including the image of Señor de la Humildad y la Paciencia from the mid-17th century. The building’s history and its images offer different aspects of cultural heritage to explore.
Founded in 1649 and restored, the Antiguo Convento de San Sebastián now houses the public library, an exhibition space and the visitor centre. The Centro de InformaciĂłn TurĂstica de Los Silos also provides information about the municipality’s historic and natural heritage. Check the visitor services’ opening hours before your trip. Guided tours of the historic centre are available for groups of 15 or more and must be booked in advance at the Los Silos visitor centre.
Hiking and historic trails
The PR-TF 53 “Los Silos – Cuevas Negras – Erjos” is an officially approved, moderate, linear hiking trail, 5.7 kilometres long. It passes through Cuevas Negras and the Barranco de El Salto, reaching Los Silos via Calle Susana. Its length, difficulty and linear route are practical criteria for planning your hike; check the trail conditions and access before setting out.
The history of the Sendero de Cuevas Negras is also linked to connections between places: in the past, a path connecting Los Silos and Santiago del Teide ran here. Later, it became the Camino Real, linking Los Silos with Erjos. This historical context should be distinguished from the current route description of the PR-TF 53. When planning, you can take into account both the published hiking information and the trail’s former role.
Events and local offerings
The Festival Internacional del Cuento de Los Silos has been held every December since 1996. Festival Boreal takes place in Los Silos every September. Its programme includes participatory environmental and cultural activities, such as turtle releases, recycling workshops, concerts, markets and an ecotourism fair. If you want to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates and programme before your trip.
To get a taste of local produce, you can plan a visit to the Mercadillo del Agricultor de Los Silos. The market is open on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. As market hours can change, it is a good idea to check the opening time before visiting.
Getting there and finding your way
The TF-42 is the main northern access road to Los Silos. It connects Icod de los Vinos with Buenavista del Norte and crosses the municipality. Check road conditions before driving. Several TITSA bus routes connect Los Silos with municipalities in northern Tenerife as well as Puerto de la Cruz. If travelling by bus, check the relevant connections and timetables in advance.
Coast and seaside activities
On the Costa de Los Silos, there is a beach with pebbles in the outer area and a completely sandy seabed. It is suitable for swimming, particularly in the summer months. Check sea conditions before swimming. The seabeds in the municipality also offer opportunities for diving and snorkelling. Before taking part, check sea conditions and the availability of local services.
