Los Abrigos: Beach, Pier and Fishing History
Accommodation in Los Abrigos
Los Abrigos brings together a small beach and a strong fishing tradition. For planning your trip, you can consider several different aspects: the pebble and sand beach, natural pools nearby, walks along the maritime pier, and memorials to the local fishing community. There is also a restaurant scene where fresh fish and traditional dishes play an important role. Choosing this town gives you more than a place to swim: the beach, fishing history and culinary tradition each offer a different focus for your stay.
Beach and swimming conditions
Los Abrigos beach consists of pebbles and dark sand and measures 50 m long and 50 m wide. These dimensions make it a compact beach; if you expect a stretch of sand throughout, bear in mind the pebble content. Swimming conditions are moderate, with waves that can vary from season to season and from day to day. If you plan to swim, take the current local conditions into account. You can reach the beach by car; the TF-65 runs nearby.
Natural pools nearby
Nearby Los Abrigos, lava flows meeting the sea have formed small natural pools where you can enjoy a calm swim. At the beach, by contrast, swimming conditions are moderate, so there are two swimming options with different water characteristics. The pools also differ in that they were formed by lava flows, while the beach is characterised by pebbles and dark sand. Before visiting the pools, check local sea conditions and make sure you can access them safely.
Walks and fishing history
The area around the maritime pier is suitable for walks. A municipal description dated 3 April 2023 locates the sculpture ensemble honouring Antonio Celso Marcelino on Calle La Marina, along the path towards the pier, and describes it as installed and visible. It identifies Marcelino as one of the last boatbuilders in the Canary Islands; the ensemble also pays tribute to the fishing families of Los Abrigos. The reference to boatbuilding highlights the craftsmanship behind the town’s maritime history, while the dedication to the fishing families points to its community dimension. A 2023 municipal description also presents a mural at the pier as a reflection of the history and character of the local fishing community. Unlike the ensemble’s specific dedication, this reference encompasses the community as a whole.
Restaurants and direct sales
Los Abrigos’ many restaurants serve fresh fish and traditional dishes. Individual menus may change, so if you’re visiting for a particular dish, check the restaurant’s current offerings. The Lonja Pesquera de Los Abrigos offers another perspective on fishing: it is considered one of the most important points for the direct sale of seafood products in southern Tenerife. Unlike the restaurants, it sells products rather than prepared dishes. Check sales and opening details before visiting.
