Máguez: Mountains, Village History and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Máguez
Máguez is considered one of the oldest villages in the municipality of Haría. Its development, protected mountain landscape and several walking options offer different starting points for planning your trip. You can get to know the place through its history, church artworks and various routes.
Village and Landscape
Máguez is sheltered by a group of mountains that includes Los Llanos, Los Helechos, Las Quemadas, La Mesa and La Atalaya. The fields around the village also shape the landscape: there are vineyards, fig trees and pineapple cultivation. The named mountains thus meet an agricultural setting.
Church of Santa Bárbara and Local History
The village developed around two central points: the Church of Santa Bárbara and La Sociedad. A mural in the church is made from stones from the Rofera de Guatiza and depicts two angels holding the tabernacle. The church’s furnishings also include two lamps made of fired clay and a tabernacle door crafted by ceramicist Juan Brito. The details about the materials, depiction and craftsmanship offer insight into different aspects of the church’s design.
Walking Routes Around Máguez
The Haría–Máguez walking route connects Haría and Máguez via the 330 m-high La Atalaya volcano. Check trail conditions before setting out. Another route is “Caminando Máguez,” a dedicated route in the “Caminando Haría” visitor guide project by the municipality of Haría. The project’s routes, including “Caminando Máguez,” are circular. The descriptions therefore differ: Haría–Máguez connects two named places via La Atalaya, while “Caminando Máguez” is one of the circular routes in the municipal project.
The “Caminando Haría” guide contains route descriptions, maps and elevation profiles. Detailed KML files are available to download online; check their availability as you plan your trip. The maps and elevation profiles supplement the route descriptions with different details about the route. You can review the information about your chosen route before setting out.
La Piedra Mágica Trail
La Piedra Mágica Trail offers a short option of 1.3 km and a long option of 2.66 km. Both start and end at the Aula de la Naturaleza de Máguez. The two distances provide a clear comparison of the length, while the start and end point remains the same. The trail is clearly marked and easy to find.
In a story, the character María, a farmer’s daughter from Máguez, introduces children to past rural ways of life, customs and farming traditions. The route also explores various living organisms and natural features in the surrounding area, ending at Piedra Mágica. Its educational focus is preschool, including children aged three, four and five. Cultural storytelling and exploring nature are brought together in the trail’s theme.
San Pedro Festivities
A municipal report from June 2024 lists a programme for the San Pedro festivities in Máguez from 25 to 30 June, featuring workshops, music, a verbena, an excursion, competitions, and the traditional procession and Mass. Individual programme items may vary from one edition to another. If San Pedro is relevant to your travel plans, check the dates and programme for the edition in question.
