Macher is a dispersed village stretching on both sides of the road to Yaiza. Old manor houses from the last century have been preserved. For travellers interested in rural history, architecture, agricultural heritage and the local traditions of the Fiestas de San Pedro come together here.

Village history and rural heritage

Macher’s ethnographic heritage includes traditional rural architecture and water-collection structures, including maretas and aljibes. The village’s history is shaped not only by its buildings, but also by the historic collection of water.

Traditionally, onions were grown north of the road and tomatoes to the south. This division gives the history of agriculture a clear spatial distinction; today, however, little agricultural activity remains.

Another detail concerns the Ermita u Oratorio del Apóstol San Pedro. It was built on an estate that included a dwelling and a chapel. The Molina de Macher is considered representative of rural or ecotourism in Lanzarote. Check visitor access separately if you are planning a visit.

On 22 May 2022, a low-difficulty interpretive walk took place through the village. It covered the village’s history, the agricultural landscape and the Molina.

Fiestas de San Pedro

The Fiestas de San Pedro are Macher’s patron saint festival and take place at the end of June. Since the programme can vary from year to year, check the specific dates if the festival is important to your travel plans. The festivities include performances by local folk groups and traditional games such as Envite and Bola. Drinks are also part of the tradition: wine and lemon mistela are enjoyed during the fiestas; on the day of the Asadero de Jareas, locally made mistela is served.

Mountains, activities and coast

Macher lies between the mountains of Tinasoria and Guardilama. Montaña de Guardilama is the island’s third-highest mountain. Macher is also known for paragliding and hang-gliding. Whether these activities are available depends on providers, weather and safety conditions.

On the coast of Macher, there is an area known as Barranco del Kikere where naturism is practised. Check local access conditions before visiting.

Bodegas Timanfaya is located in a cave formed by lava and ash from Timanfaya. Wine-tasting courses and ecotourism experiences are offered there; check the current availability of these activities before your trip.

Getting there and practical information
