Tejeda: Culture and Heritage in Gran Canaria
Accommodation in Tejeda
When choosing Tejeda for a stay, its cultural highlights help you plan what you might visit. These include museums, traditional architecture and archaeological heritage. The various sites also differ in how you can experience them. While museums offer exhibitions and tours, access to Cuevas del Rey is difficult and involves narrow paths and steps carved into the rock.
Museums and cultural themes
The Museo Abraham Cárdenes has a permanent exhibition of works by the sculptor. There is also a space for temporary exhibitions, including exhibitions from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria’s art collection. This means the same museum offers both a permanent display of works and a changing programme. Since the exhibition programme and visiting arrangements may change, check them in advance if a museum visit is important to your plans.
At the Centro Interpretativo de Plantas Medicinales, an interactive tour takes visitors through several rooms. Topics include various natural remedies and the 19th-century Botica canaria. Unlike the Museo Abraham Cárdenes, this centre focuses on plants and remedies rather than a sculptor’s works and changing art exhibitions. These different themes can help you choose a visit based on the cultural subjects that interest you. The centre’s opening arrangements may also change; check before your visit.
Traditional architecture in Tejeda
Tejeda as a whole is an example of the island’s typical civil architecture. Stone, wood and roof tiles are characteristic of the municipality’s traditional architecture. Well-known features include wooden balconies and Mudéjar coffered ceilings. The built environment thus adds another cultural perspective to the museum exhibits: here, the focus is on materials, building elements and architectural forms rather than an exhibition. The official Ruta de Tejeda also includes a walk through the historic town centre.
Archaeological heritage and visiting conditions
Together with Roque Bentayga and Roque Camello, Cuevas del Rey forms the archaeological complex of the Sierra del Bentayga, which has been designated a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). The Roque of Cuevas del Rey, Roque Bentayga and Roque Camello also form part of the Risco CaĂdo y las Montañas Sagradas de Gran Canaria cultural landscape. This cultural landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2019. The two designations refer to different contexts: the archaeological complex on the one hand and the cultural landscape on the other.
Access to Cuevas del Rey is difficult. It involves narrow paths and steps carved into the rock. Take these conditions into account when planning and check access arrangements before your visit. This helps distinguish a visit to this archaeological site from activities held in exhibition spaces. Cruz de Tejeda and the Parque ArqueolĂłgico de Bentayga are also stops on the official Ruta de Tejeda.
Ruta de Tejeda, getting there and other cultural highlights
The Ruta de Tejeda combines a visit to Cruz de Tejeda, a walk through Tejeda’s historic town centre and a visit to the Parque Arqueológico de Bentayga. This itinerary brings together different aspects: a site outside the town centre, a walk through the historic area and an archaeological visit. Road conditions and access to sites may change; check in advance if you are planning the route.
The main access roads to Tejeda are the GC-15, GC-21 and GC-60. Road conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting off. The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro can be visited in Tejeda; visiting arrangements may change here too. Those interested in the history of festivals will find another cultural connection in the Fiesta del Almendro en Flor: it was the first pagan festival to be established as such in Gran Canaria and one of the first in the entire archipelago.
