Tafira Baja: Gardens and Mill History
Accommodation in Tafira Baja
If you’re looking for a hotel in Tafira Baja, the area offers a variety of themes for your stay: a botanical garden with a historic walking route, mill history, public sports and play areas, and places of religious and cultural significance.
Garden and Landscape
The Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo lies along the Barranco Guiniguada between Tafira Baja and the Dragonal district and covers 27 hectares. A visit offers a historic walking route through its distinctive areas and grounds. The garden’s size sets it apart from a single structure such as the Molino de Tafira; its walking route and varied areas also shape what a visit to the garden is about.
Mill and Water History
The Molino de Tafira is located behind the church of Tafira Baja and was built in 1821. It was the last mill powered by water from the Heredad de Tafira, also known as the Acequia de Tafira. The Heredad’s irrigation channels carried much of their water to Tafira Baja. In the 19th century, the water powered up to ten mills. The history of the water supply thus connects irrigation with mill operations.
The aqueduct built for the Molino de Tafira is preserved in good condition. It is made of stone and mortar, has a diameter of 1.50 metres and is 12 metres high. Together with the mill’s construction date, these features give a concrete sense of the historic site and its architectural scale.
Sports and Public Facilities
Pista Deportiva Tafira Baja is open to the public and free to use. It has two basketball hoops. Public bus route 25 serves the sports facility; check the route before travelling, as bus information can change. If the basketball facilities are important to your visit, confirm their condition in advance.
Plaza del General San Martín in Tafira Baja has children’s play equipment, a sports court and partially landscaped gardens. Compared with the Pista, which is specifically equipped for basketball, the plaza offers several different features. When planning, you can therefore decide whether to focus on a particular sport or on a combination of play, sports and garden areas.
Cemetery and Parish
Cementerio de Tafira was inaugurated in 1939. It is located on a hill along the road from Marzagán to Tafira. The cemetery has an area reserved exclusively for burials of members of the Jewish community. The year of its inauguration, its location and this dedicated area each give the site its own historical and cultural significance.
The parish of San Juan Crisóstomo in Tafira Baja is recorded under the date 18 March 1943 and the number 1306. Services are held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m., Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. and Sundays at 11:00 a.m. As service times can change, check the current schedule before your visit.
