Mutriku: Old Town, Port and Flysch
Accommodation in Mutriku
Mutriku combines a historic townscape with themes related to the sea and geology. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different interests: architectural history in the Old Town, maritime tours and excursions to the black flysch cliffs each tell a different side of the town.
Old Town and Architectural History
Mutriku’s Old Town was declared a monumental ensemble in 1995. Its steep, narrow streets are lined with manor houses and palaces dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. One striking example is the Palacio Arrietakua: this inhabited and well-preserved palace dates from the 18th century and belonged to the seafarers Antonio de Gaztañeta and Cosme Damián Churruca.
The Torre de Berriatua, also known as Sulengua, also connects architectural history with the history of the town. It survived the devastating fire that ravaged Mutriku in 1543 and formerly served as a watchtower for the port. Today, it is considered the tallest surviving medieval tower house in Gipuzkoa. The Church of San Andrés de Astigarribia is one of the oldest churches in the province and one of its few pre-Romanesque examples.
If you are interested in maritime heritage, the “Mutriku marinera” tour uses the town’s houses and palaces to tell the story of Mutriku. It starts at the tourist office on Txurruka Plaza. The wave power plant offers a different historical focus: it was the first facility to generate electrical energy from the power of waves. The tour of the plant starts at the old swimming pool in the port.
Port, Beach and Flysch
The marina was established in the historic port in 2014. It preserves the port’s layout as a traditional fishing harbour and has 301 berths for boats with a maximum length of 14 metres. Mutriku Beach has two natural swimming pools. Swimming, windsurfing, canoeing, bodyboarding, volleyball, diving and recreational fishing are possible there; some services are seasonal.
The black flysch cliffs offer another point of interest. The black flysch visible on Mutriku’s cliffs formed in deep channels shaped by tectonic movements as the Bay of Biscay opened. Mutriku’s geological features also include giant ammonites.
The “Siete Playas” boat tour starts at Mutriku Port and heads to the black flysch cliffs between Mutriku and Saturraran Beach. Access to the cliffs themselves is a separate matter: they can only be reached from Saturraran Beach or the port at low tide; the area is dangerous. The “Nautilus, fossils of flysch” tour begins at the Nautilus Centre and combines a visit to the Nautilus Museum with a boat trip to the black flysch cliffs. This trip is weather- and sea-dependent. “Flysch en familia” also combines a fossil workshop at the Museo Nautilus with a boat trip from Mutriku to Saturraran Beach. Dates and prices may change; check them before planning.
Arno and Routes
The limestone Arno mountain range is part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network and was designated a Special Area of Conservation in 2013. Its holm oak (Quercus ilex) forests are among the most significant in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. A circular route starts and ends in Mutriku and passes over the peaks of Arno (601 m), Jangoikomendi (528 m) and Tontorramendi (386 m). Another route starts and ends at the Ermita de San Isidro; along the way, information panels describe the area’s geological and ethnographic features. The named peaks and information panels offer different points of reference for planning the walks.
There is a special requirement for bus groups visiting Astigarrabia: the neighbourhood cannot be reached by bus. Groups must leave their vehicle at a designated point on the GI-3230 and walk about 220 metres along the old road with a guide.
Markets and Local Cuisine
The annual DĂa del Verdel is associated with Mutriku. Local chefs serve mackerel as pintxos, grilled and in marmitako; the exact date varies from year to year. The Azoka Txikia market takes place from March to December on the second Saturday of each month at Beheko Plaza. If you are planning a market visit or the festival, check the relevant date. This lets you schedule your visit around these recurring events without assuming that either has a fixed date.
