Cala En Porter – Beach, Gorge and Trails
Accommodation in Cala En Porter
Anyone looking for a hotel in Cala En Porter can choose where to stay based on the desired mix of beach, landscape and culture. The beach, the barranco and several described routes offer different points of focus – from a day on the coast to longer walks through the island’s interior.
Beach and landscape
Cala en Porter beach has fine white sand and shallow, clear water. It is about 150 metres long and 200 metres wide. There is a buoyed-off area for water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking; water sports facilities may be seasonal. In summer, the beach has a lifeguard service and an accessible walkway for people with disabilities.
Behind the beach, the Torrente de Cala en Porter forms a small wetland visited by many birds. The Barranco de Cala en Porter offers a different perspective on the landscape: at twelve kilometres long, it is Menorca’s second-longest gorge, after the Barranco de Algendar. Cultivated plots, kitchen gardens and fruit trees shape the valley floor. The coastal landscape and cultivated valley floor are thus two distinct sides of the area.
Routes between the settlement and the coast
Municipal Route 6, “Torre d'en Galmés – Cala en Porter”, is 6.2 kilometres long and rated moderate. It starts at the interpretation centre of the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés and ends at Cala en Porter beach. Much of the route passes through the Natura 2000 network, including the Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area for Birds ES0000237 Des Canutells a Llucalari. The municipal description states that the route is in good condition; as trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Stage 16 of the Camà de Cavalls also reaches the edge of the Cala en Porter urbanisation, near the beach car park. The beach is 250 metres from the endpoint. The stage also offers a detour to the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés, with its interpretation centre, marked trails and information panels. Check route and access conditions before setting off.
The longer circular route, Municipal Route 7, “Barranc de s'Alblagai – Cala en Porter – Torre d'en Galmés”, is listed as 16.8 kilometres long; it is also rated moderate. The journey is estimated to take about 65 minutes by bicycle and 180 minutes on foot using Nordic walking poles. Some sections lie within the Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area for Birds ES0000237 Des Canutells a Llucalari, as well as the ANEI Me-11 De Biniparratx a Llucalari. When comparing the two municipal routes, the significant difference in length is a useful point of reference: Route 6 is the shorter one at 6.2 kilometres, while Route 7 covers 16.8 kilometres on a circular route.
Cave, tower and local legend
The Cova d'en Xoroi sea cave in the cliffs houses a club with panoramic views. It offers daytime sessions, sunset events with live music and nighttime events. As opening times and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting. According to local legend, Xoroi, a man of unknown origin, arrived by sea and took refuge in the Cova d'en Xoroi.
West of the beach stands the Talaia de ses Penyes, a defensive tower on a 68-metre-high cliff. Together with the Talayotic settlement on Route 6 and the detour on Stage 16, the tower offers another perspective on the cultural history that local descriptions present alongside the beach and nature.
Fiestas and beach volleyball
The Cala en Porter fiestas take place every year on the third weekend of September. Their listed elements include a Jaleo at Cala en Porter beach, the Qualcada procession on horseback and the handover of the flag to the Caixer fadrĂ. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
The Sant Llorenç beach volleyball tournament has also been held on the beach: the 30th edition took place in 2024 and the 31st in 2025. The tournament was organised by Club Voleibol Alaior and the Ajuntament d’Alaior. These two consecutive editions provide a timeframe for events on the beach without implying a specific date for a future edition.
