Es Caló is a small fishing settlement on Formentera’s Tramuntana coast. It lies between Sant Ferran and the climb to El Pilar de la Mola. The natural harbor is surrounded by white huts. When choosing a place to stay, several specific aspects of the area come into focus: the coast and beach, trails, cultural heritage, and a fixed date in the events calendar.

Beach and Coastal Landscape

Es Caló beach lies at the narrowest point of the isthmus connecting Formentera’s two opposing highlands. Ses Platgetes is a two-minute walk from Es Caló. The water there is clear and shallow; with a snorkel mask, you can explore the sandy and rocky seabed. A dune area with pine trees and junipers stretches behind Ses Platgetes. The nearest parking for Ses Platgetes is in Es Caló de Sant Agustí; from there, you can reach the beach on foot. There are therefore different factors to consider when choosing a beach: the location of Es Caló beach on the isthmus, and the clear, shallow water at Ses Platgetes, which is ideal for snorkeling.

Trails with Different Destinations

If you enjoy walking, the Camí de Sa Pujada begins in Es Caló. It is an old paved path that climbs up to La Mola. Route 24 also starts in Es Caló de Sant Agustí; it passes through a wooded area of pine trees and junipers and connects Formentera’s Tramuntana coast with the south coast. The two trails can be distinguished by their features: the Camí is a historic paved path that climbs to La Mola, while Route 24 connects two stretches of coastline. Near Es Caló, after a turnoff to Caló des Mort, a path about 800 m long leads to the cove. There is a parking area nearby. As trail conditions can change, take them into account when planning your trip.

Escars and History

The handcrafted wooden escars in Es Caló are arranged radially. In 2002, they were designated an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). There is also an ancient fortification from the Late Roman Empire between Sant Ferran and Es Caló. It was built at the beginning of the 4th century but was never fully completed. This means there are two distinct historical points of interest in the area: the escars’ cultural designation in 2002 and the fortification’s ancient construction history.

Festival Day and Cuisine

The Festes de Sant Agustí are held every year on 28 August in Es Caló de Sant Agustí. The program includes a traditional dance and folk events. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, the date offers a clear point of reference. Restaurants serving traditional local cuisine are also recommended in Es Caló. As individual businesses may change, it is best to check specific restaurant details before your visit.
