The Faro de Tapia has been in operation since 1 September 1859; it is the only lighthouse in Asturias located on an island. From the harbour, the island can be reached on foot via a breakwater about 100 metres long. The Faro is one of the nine Asturian lighthouses included in Spain’s catalogue of lighthouses of cultural and historical interest. Its location and its inclusion in the catalogue offer two different ways to explore Tapia’s maritime history.

Coastal scenery and protected nature

Playa de Penarronda is shared with the Concejo of Castropol and is the westernmost beach in the Municipio of Tapia de Casariego. It was declared a natural monument in 2002; within the Natura 2000 network, it is also designated both a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC). Endangered plants grow in the dunes, and protected birds can be observed on the islets of Las Pantorgas to the east. Its protected status, dune flora and birdwatching are specific aspects of the natural environment at this beach.

The Ruta Lagos de Silva also runs along coastal cliffs and small coves; protected bird species can be observed in the surrounding area. If you want to choose a route based on the time available, the AS-116 Tapia–Playa de Arnao crossing offers concrete planning details: it is 10.3 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 15 minutes. The distance and duration together give an idea of how much time to allow. Also check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Lagos de Silva mining landscape offers a different perspective: the mining area covers more than ten hectares and extends more than 20 metres underground. Here, the focus is on a landscape shaped by mining, while the Ruta Lagos de Silva takes you along coastal cliffs and small coves.

Activities and events

The KartĂłdromo de Tapia is a sports facility for recreational and competitive karting. The track is 1,200 metres long and offers up to five configurations. If you are planning a visit, check the opening arrangements and booking conditions in advance.

The Festival Intercéltico d’Occidente has been held every year in August in Tapia de Casariego since 1997. In 2013, it was recognised as an event of regional tourist interest. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact dates and programme for the year in question.

Pilgrimage route and orientation

One stage of the Camino de Santiago del Norte passes through Tapia de Casariego on its route through Asturias. The municipal pilgrims’ hostel is in Represas, on Calle San Martín. The hostel and the pilgrimage route are two distinct points of reference for planning; check the hostel’s availability and operating conditions before travelling.

Buildings, harbour and history

The Puerta Histórica de Tapia de Casariego is one of the main entrances to the Parque Histórico del Navia and houses a thematic museum. The Casa del Reguero, now the Casa de Cultura, is considered Tapia’s oldest building and dates from 1613. The Capilla de San Sebastián is also part of the town’s history: it dates from the 17th century. The Palacio o Torre de Lindoy in the parish of Serantes also dates from that period and is an important example of Asturian manor-house architecture.

On 23 August 2026, the Museo Los Señores de las Casas Palacio was closed for planned renovation work. According to information dated 23 August 2026, after reopening, guided visits are expected to take place Monday to Friday by prior appointment.

The Mirador de Os Cañóis is located on a former defensive fort. It was built in 1780 with the approval of Charles III to defend against pirate attacks; from the viewpoint, you can see the Asturian and Galician coasts. This place brings together the history of coastal defence and sweeping views along two stretches of coastline.

The development of the harbour is also part of Tapia’s history: it was the first port where maize from America was brought ashore. The construction of the new harbour in the 19th century fostered the development of the local canning industry. This links the maritime past both to the arrival of a new agricultural product and to a local industry.

If you are looking for a hotel in Tapia de Casariego, consider whether coastal scenery, historic sites, the pilgrimage route or karting will be the focus of your stay. These interests offer different starting points for planning your trip.
