Pravia: Churches, History and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Pravia
Baroque church architecture, a pre-Romanesque church and traditional watermills give Pravia a range of historical highlights. At the same time, gentle mountains, broad valleys and the Nalón and Narcea rivers shape the landscape. Those interested in architectural history can compare different eras in Pravia; trails, mills and the weekly market add local traditions and practical orientation to this perspective.
Baroque Architecture and Music
The Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is a Baroque church with a Latin cross floor plan. Its distinctive features include an ornate stone portal and a square bell tower. The church was commissioned in 1715 as part of an important Baroque ensemble. Its floor plan, portal and tower each convey different aspects of its architecture: from the layout of the church interior to the design of its exterior features.
The organ is also part of the Colegiata’s history. The Baroque instrument is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) and has been restored. It is still played on special occasions. If you would like to hear the organ, bear in mind that performances are tied to these occasions when planning your visit. In this way, the Colegiata combines architecture that can be seen year-round with musical use reserved for special events.
Santianes: Pre-Romanesque Architectural History
The Iglesia Prerrománica de Santianes, also known as the Iglesia de San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista, is the oldest surviving example of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture. Its origins are linked to King Silo and the transfer of the court from Cangas de Onís to Pravia: the church was built at Silo’s initiative and designed as a palace church that would serve as a royal pantheon. Santianes is therefore not only an example of an early architectural period, but is also connected with a change of court location.
Santianes is also home to El Rincón de las Aves, a zoological centre open to visitors, with more than 135 bird species. The centre includes a garden with over 400 plant species. For travellers interested in birds and plants as well as churches and architectural history, this offers a different perspective. The two places appeal to different interests, so you need not limit yourself to just one aspect of Pravia’s history.
Mills, Market and Trails
The Molinos de La Veiga have continued to grind grain using traditional water power since 1890. Here, the focus is not on church architecture, but on a craft that is still practised today. You must contact the mills by phone in advance and arrange an appointment before visiting. Plan this step ahead of time rather than assuming you can drop in spontaneously.
Trails also tell stories of local history. The Ruta de los Marineros follows the routes taken by female fish sellers travelling inland from Cudillero to sell their goods. Its historical interpretation focuses on selling goods and the routes between Cudillero and inland areas. The Ruta en coche de los Miradores offers a different perspective: on the return journey to Pravia, it passes through Los Cabos. The two routes can be distinguished by their themes: the history of the female fish sellers on one, and the drive through Los Cabos on the return to Pravia on the other.
Rivers, Landscape and Weekly Market
Gentle mountains and broad valleys define Pravia’s landscape, which is crossed by the Nalón and Narcea rivers. Salmon are associated with the rivers, while fabas (large beans) are grown in the fertile river plains. The landscape thus brings together two distinct local features: the connection between the rivers and salmon, and the cultivation of fabas in the floodplains.
A weekly market is held in Pravia on Thursdays. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the current market day before making your plans. Together with the churches, the centre in Santianes and the mills, it offers a varied perspective on Pravia: architectural history, traditional water power, local produce and different routes each provide their own focus.
