Gozón combines impressive coastal landscapes with Luanco’s maritime heritage. Cabo Peñas is the northernmost point of the Principality of Asturias. At Peña la Gaviera near Cabo Peñas, sheer cliffs rise about 100 metres; at Punta de la Vaca, there is a viewpoint for watching migrating seabirds. Playa de Moniello is also part of the landscape: it lies within the Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape Area. At a regional level, the Comarca Cabo Peñas comprises the municipalities of Gozón and Carreño and lies between Gijón and Avilés.

Dunes, Beaches and Coastal Conditions

The beaches offer different landscapes and conditions. Playa de Xagó is surrounded by an extensive dune ecosystem of great ecological and botanical value. Its strong waves attract surfers and fishers; sea conditions can vary. Playa de Verdicio, also known as Tenrero, also has strong waves. Surfers and fishers visit it year-round. Its extensive dune field is of great ecological value for flora, including vulnerable species.

Playa de Bañugues offers a different coastal setting, with a rural character and golden sand. At Playa de Luanco, the Gayo breakwater protects the beach, which has calm waves. Playa de Luanco is easy to reach on foot or by car; parking and adapted access are available there. As services may change seasonally, check local information before your visit.

Luanco’s History and Maritime Culture

The Historic Ensemble of Luanco developed around the fishing harbour and the coastline. Narrow streets, traditional fishermen’s houses and distinctive buildings reflect the town’s historical development; fishing and maritime activities shape the area’s character. Iglesia Santa María de Luanco was built between 1728 and 1735 to a design by Pedro Morloti Samoneti. Seven Baroque altarpieces remain inside. Torre de la Canal dates from 1705 and now houses Luanco’s clock. If you plan to visit the interior, check access in advance.

The Museo Marítimo de Asturias offers an audio guide via QR code. Check before your trip whether it is currently available. At the Festival del Bonito, various bonito dishes are sampled in Luanco’s restaurants in early July, including bonito roll and bonito salad. The date may change; if you are planning your trip around it, check the date of the current edition.

Routes for Urban and Coastal Views

The easy urban route through Luanco runs from the viewpoint at Playa de Samarincha to the Museo Marítimo de Asturias. It connects two clearly identified landmarks in the town. The Senda Costera de Luanco a Candás starts at Playa de la Ribera in Luanco. Check trail conditions before setting out.

For a broader coastal route, the Senda Costera de Cabo Peñas a San Juan de Nieva runs from Cabo Peñas towards Faro de San Juan. The Semáforo de Peñas serves as a landmark: this glass-fronted building is a few metres from Faro de Peñas and houses the Centro de Interpretación del Paisaje Protegido del Cabo Peñas. The two lighthouse names refer to different landmarks for navigation. It is also advisable to check trail conditions before setting out on this route.
