When looking for hotels for a trip to Tobed, the focus of your stay can help you plan: Mudéjar architecture, historic buildings, local festival traditions, or trails in the Sierra de Algairén. The town offers a range of cultural and landscape-related attractions.

Mudéjar Architecture and Churches

The Iglesia de la Virgen de Tobed is one of the best-preserved examples of a 14th-century Aragonese Mudéjar fortress church. It belongs to the group of Mudéjar architecture in Aragon that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. Construction of the present building began in 1356 and took place in several phases. The project was supported and sponsored by Pedro IV of Aragon, Lope Fernández de Luna, and Pope Benedict XIII.

The church of Santa María de Tobed also displays different artistic layers. Geometric Islamic motifs can be found in the presbytery. The Chapel of the Virgin has 16th-century tiles from Muel in blue, green, and yellow; the high altar features Baroque design. If you plan to visit churches and other cultural sites, contact them by phone before your trip: occasional closures or changes to cultural activity schedules may occur.

Palaces, Museums, and Art

The Palacio de la Encomienda, also known as the Palacio de los Canónigos or Palacio del Comendador, dates from the 17th century. The building is an example of Aragonese Baroque manor-house architecture and was formerly the seat of the Commandery of the Holy Sepulchre of Calatayud in Tobed. It has three floors and a classically designed brick façade that opens onto the plaza. Beneath the palace are recently renovated former cellar rooms belonging to the Museo Etnográfico de Tobed. The museum includes stone vats and channels associated with the former rooms used to store wine and other liquids for gastronomic purposes.

The Museo Parroquial de Tobed is located in a room in the former cloister of the Iglesia de Santa María. Its collection includes religious objects from the parish church of San Pedro and the church of the Virgen de Tobed, including relics of San Valentín and the Virgin, several paintings, and a Gothic panel. The Espacio Mudéjar–Museo Mahoma Calahorrí is on the ground floor of the Palacio de los Canónigos, also called the Palacio del Prior. It introduces leading Mudéjar masters of Aragon, their working methods, and the materials they used, and explores the architecture through a sensory engagement with the building.

Another artistic perspective is offered by a retrospective selection of more than 50 works by ceramic artist Conchita Gimeno, who was born in Tobed. Her work is inspired by the stucco decoration of the Iglesia de la Virgen de Tobed and the town’s centuries-old pottery heritage.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The San Valentín festival in Tobed is celebrated on February 14. It includes a procession, veneration of the locally held relic of San Valentín, and the distribution of blessed roscones served with Moscatel. On April 25, the San Marcos festival traditionally includes opening the local wine cellars and holding a shared meal. Details may vary from year to year.

Landscape and Trails

The Sierra de Algairén has typical Piedmont vegetation and a diverse range of wildlife, including badgers, genets, foxes, wild boar, golden eagles, vultures, and owls. A distinctive clay formation is Los Abuelos in the Trascastillo ravine: erosion has created almost human-like shapes there, along with impressive views of the ravine.

The GR90 trail network around Tobed includes 635 kilometers of marked paths. The GR90.3 variant runs from Collado de Valdecerezo to Tobed and continues to Valdemadera, at 1,275 meters, the highest peak in the Sierra de Algairén. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out on a hike. The heritage walk starts at the Museo Mudéjar Mahoma Calahorri and visits Mudéjar sites in the town, including the Palacio del Prior or Palacio de los Canónigos, the Lonja, and the Iglesia Mudéjar de la Virgen de Tobed with its defensive area and the Museo Parroquial. You should also check the details of this visit before your trip.
