Castillo de Los Luna and Mudéjar architecture define the historical highlights of Mesones De Isuela. They are joined by a medieval town centre, churches from different centuries and described hiking trails. If you are planning a stay focused on local history and architecture, you will find specific themes here to help plan your trip.

Castillo de Los Luna and Mudéjar Architecture

Castillo de Los Luna is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its present structure was built between 1370 and 1382. The complex covers more than 3,000 square metres and has six cylindrical towers. The castle houses the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Its roof structure is considered one of the outstanding examples of Aragonese Mudéjar roof construction.

The historical highlights extend beyond the castle. The Mudéjar tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was designated a Bien Catalogado del Patrimonio Cultural Aragonés in 2002. Several architectural features can be distinguished in its form: the tower has a square ground plan, an octagonal upper section and diamond-pattern decoration. The parish church itself has Mudéjar origins; its original building dates from the 16th century.

Churches and Townscape

The two chapels known as ermitas also represent different building histories. The Ermita de San Roque was built in the late 17th century. It preserves geometric decorations in the Mudéjar tradition and a Baroque altarpiece. The Ermita de San Vicente Ferrer is in the town centre and was built in the 17th century.

The historic town centre follows a medieval layout on the steep slopes of the rocky outcrop on which the walled Castillo de Los Luna stands. A walk around Mesones De Isuela starts at the castle and takes in the landscape and the town’s layout as you make your way through the streets. This lets you view the individual buildings in the context of the town’s structure.

Hiking Trails and Regional Route

The PR-Z 16 from Mesones De Isuela to Cueva del Moreno starts at the ascent to the castle. It follows paths and tracks towards the Barranco de Andacón and then follows the stream. Another description of the PR-Z 16 covers the route from Brea de Aragón to Mesones De Isuela: it descends through orchards and crosses the GR 90. The two trail sections therefore differ in their landmarks—Cueva del Moreno and the stream on one, orchards and the GR 90 crossing on the other. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.

Mesones De Isuela is also part of Route 3, “Los Mudéjares Mestizo y Fronterizo,” on the regional Territorio Mudéjar route. This route also includes Saviñán, La Almunia de Doña Godina and Alpartir. This association provides a regional context for exploring Mudéjar architecture, while the local walk focuses on the landscape and layout of Mesones De Isuela.

Events and Visits

The Fiesta del Mondongo is held annually on 8 December, organised by the Mesolunaque cultural association. A procession is described for 16 August: residents make a pilgrimage to the ermita and carry the image of San Roque. If you want to plan your trip around one of these dates, note that the information differs in its timing: the annual date is given for the fiesta, while a date is provided for the procession.

The tourist information office is located on C. Castillo; guided visits are also available. Check the latest information if you are planning to include a guided visit. This will help you connect your visit to the buildings and the described trails with the themes that matter most during your stay in Mesones De Isuela.
