Monzón: Templar History and Culture
Accommodation in Monzón
Monzón combines Templar history, exhibitions on the Civil War period, and regional cuisine. When planning your stay, you can weigh these interests separately: the Catedral de Santa María del Romeral has a limited window for tourist visits; the Templar festival takes place on a recurring weekend in May. Museums and interpretation centres complement the historic buildings with their own themes.
The Cathedral and Political History
The Catedral de Santa María del Romeral was declared a National Monument and is listed in the general register of Aragonese cultural heritage as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monumento Histórico-Artístico category. From the 13th to the 17th century, it served as the venue for the Cortes of the Kingdom and the general Cortes of the Crown of Aragon. It is open for tourist visits on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 12:45 to 13:30. This 45-minute time slot may be affected by liturgical use; confirm visiting hours in advance.
Templar Architecture in Monzón
The medieval district of Monzón is one of the most complete and best-preserved monastic-style military complexes characteristic of the Templar Order. Within a later perimeter wall, the Castillo de Monzón comprises five actual Templar buildings dating from the 12th century. The perimeter wall dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The term “monastic-style military complex” refers to the distinctive combination of monastic and military features characteristic of the Templars.
Exhibitions on the Civil War Period and Ethnography
The Centro de Interpretación de la Línea del Cinca displays reconstructions of a field hospital, a shelter, a machine-gun nest, completed and unfinished trenches, and a command post. The exhibition on Civil War fortifications is spread across the basement, ground floor, and first floor. The ethnographic exhibition is on the second floor and in the attic. Military fortifications and ethnographic content are therefore presented as two distinct exhibition themes.
Joaquín Costa and the Templar Festival
The Casa Natal de Joaquín Costa houses a museum dedicated to Joaquín Costa. It also serves as an interpretation centre and as the headquarters of the Centro de estudios de la historia de Monzón (Cehimo). If these functions are important to your visit planning, confirm its current institutional use in advance.
The Homenaje Templario a Jaime I y Guillem de Mont-rodón is a historical reenactment event organised by the Monzón City Council. It has been held in Monzón on the fourth weekend of May every year since 2001. Check the dates for the relevant year if you would like to plan your trip around the event.
Traditional Cuisine
Traditional Monzón cuisine includes Ternasco de Aragón, Cardo con bacalao, judías caparronas, and tortetas. These dishes add a culinary perspective to the historical themes. If you would like to include regional cuisine in your travel plans, these four names provide specific options to explore.
