Aler combines a medieval-style, bastion-like village layout with religious buildings and megalithic excursion destinations. Hiking routes are another aspect to consider when planning your trip: one route is listed with its length and duration, while another offers an option with a detour to a museum. You can shape your stay around architecture, history or an outdoor tour.

Village Scenery Between Palace, Wall and Church

The small village center is overlooked by a fortified palace known as the “Castillo.” Together with the surviving remains of a medieval wall, it defines Aler’s historic character. The bastion-like complex provides a helpful framework for understanding the village’s individual buildings: the palace, the wall remains and the church belong to different parts of the village landscape, but together they tell of its medieval character.

The Iglesia de Santa María is at the upper end of the village center. It stands on the eastern edge of a small, enclosed square that apparently originally served a defensive function. Its distinctive octagonal tower provides a clear architectural accent. The square and church give the upper part of the village its own character; the square’s presumed former function should be understood as a possibility, not a confirmed interpretation.

Religious Buildings Around Aler

The religious buildings around the village include the hermitages of San Martín and San Pedro. San Pedro is also associated with local festivals: the hermitage is dedicated to him. The remains of the Church of San Donato are located in Mas de Puybert. These places add other religious buildings and ruins in the area around Aler to the picture provided by the Iglesia de Santa María.

Dolmen Destinations and Hiking Routes

Aler’s excursion destinations include the megalithic dolmens of Mas de Abat and the dolmen site of Mas de Balón. Both are classed as megalithic destinations; their names distinguish two separate sites that you can consider individually when planning your trip. The Ruta de los Dólmenes provides a separate route option: circular route 17, also known as Circular 17, follows a GR circular trail between Benabarre and Aler.

This route is listed as 13.285 kilometers long and taking 3 hours and 55 minutes. That is just under four hours and helps you gauge the time required for the tour. The route climbs gently to the Mirador de San Salvador viewpoint. Another option is hiking trail PR-HU 130, with a variant that includes a detour to the Casal Museum in Mas de Puibert. The two trails offer different experiences: the Ruta de los Dólmenes links Benabarre and Aler, while the described variant of PR-HU 130 leads to the museum.

Landscape

Aler lies under the protection of the Sierra de Carrodilla and on the route down to the Barasona Reservoir. This setting adds a landscape dimension to the buildings and excursion destinations. Your plans can therefore combine the medieval-style village center, religious buildings in the surrounding area and destinations linked to a named hiking route or an excursion.
