San Nicolás Del Puerto: Waterfalls, Trails and Mudéjar Heritage
Accommodation in San Nicolás Del Puerto
San Nicolás del Puerto combines striking waterscapes with hiking trails and historic buildings. Waterfalls and pools form along the river, while a natural spring bubbles up in the town center. Visitors who want to explore the surrounding area on foot will find trails of varying lengths and routes, from a short loop to a longer hike. Mudéjar architecture and local events also offer further points of interest to help plan a visit.
Waterfalls, spring and swimming spots
The Cascadas del Huéznar form where the river flows over travertine limestone formations. Two waterfalls and their pools are surrounded by a riverside forest of elms, willows, ash trees and alders. The Cascadas have been designated a Natural Monument since 2001. As of August 26, 2026, they were temporarily closed. Before planning a visit, check whether they have reopened.
Swimming is prohibited at the Cascadas del Huéznar. The Playa de San Nicolás, located upstream, is the only authorized swimming spot. The artificial beach beside the Puente Romano de San Nicolás del Puerto is created by damming the water with the sluices next to the bridge. The bridge spans the Galindón River, whose waters form a river beach within the town center.
Another waterside spot is the Nacimiento de la Rivera del Huéznar in the town center, where water bubbles up from the ground in spurts. Nearby is a recreation area with bridges, wooden walkways and tables. The sites differ in character: the Cascadas feature waterfalls, pools and riverside woodland, while the spring is known for its bubbling water in the town center.
Hiking trails and terrain
The loop trail to the Cascadas starts at the parking lot beside the El Martinete restaurant and ends there. The official trail is 776 meters long, takes 30 minutes and is of moderate difficulty. El Rebollar is also a loop trail: it circles the Cerro del Hierro Natural Monument and, after following the Vereda del Mojón Blanco near San Nicolás del Puerto, reconnects with the Vía Verde de la Sierra. At 8.109 kilometers and about two hours of walking, El Rebollar is considerably longer; it is also rated as moderate difficulty.
The linear Solana del Calvario trail connects the Nacimiento del Huéznar recreation area with the artificial beach of San Nicolás beside the Puente Romano. The 1.7-kilometer route is estimated to take 30 minutes; its difficulty is listed as easy to moderately difficult. Unlike the two loop trails, this route therefore runs from one specified destination to another. Las Dehesas starts at the place locally known as La Playa, beside the junction with the road to the train station, and passes through extensive dehesa landscapes.
The Geo-Ruta San Nicolás also has a clearly marked starting point: its information board is on the road opposite the Playa de San Nicolás. The Sendero Cerro del Hierro passes through galleries and tunnels carved into the rock formations. Cerro del Hierro is a karst landscape shaped by erosion, with hollowed-out rocks, tunnels and appealing vegetation; abseiling, climbing and caving are possible at the Cerro. The nearest stop for intercity buses to the Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla is in San Nicolás del Puerto. Public transport with accessible vehicles is available.
Mudéjar buildings and local events
The Ermita de San Diego is a 15th-century chapel in the popular Mudéjar style. Its noted features include a wooden ceiling and a 20th-century depiction of San Diego by Castillo Lastrucci. The Iglesia de San Sebastián also dates from the 15th century: this single-nave Mudéjar building has a remnant of a Corinthian column and a rediscovered baptismal font.
Another historic detail is the Crucero de Piedra, a stone cross dating from between 1575 and 1599, set on a column of Corinthian order and pointing toward the Ruta de la Plata. The Puente Romano de San Nicolás del Puerto adds to the townscape as a bridge over the Galindón and also stands beside the artificial beach.
The Noche del Terror in San Nicolás del Puerto began in 2003 as a playful, tourist and cultural event; an official report from 2022 describes its 18th edition. Its route, about one kilometer long, runs through the woods around the town and has a different theme each year. The Romería de San Diego takes place annually on the second Sunday in May. A building in San Nicolás del Puerto is used for social and cultural purposes; it hosts exhibitions, concerts, theater performances and conferences, as well as local events such as the Noche del Terror and the Festival de Cine La Vieja Encina.
