Several distinct themes come together for a stay in Bollullos De La Mitación: the Cuatrovitas sanctuary and its festivals, the paintings in the parish church of San Martín de Tours, historic haciendas, nature activities and mosto.

Cuatrovitas: Building History and Traditions

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Cuatrovitas is the sanctuary of the Virgen de Cuatrovitas; the Romería de Cuatrovitas is held there every year. After the Reconquista, the ermita was converted into a Christian temple. Its brick minaret was built around the 12th century and derives from Syrian towers. This architectural history and the annual romería, still celebrated today, give the site both an architectural and a festive focal point.

During the romería, the image of Cuatrovitas is carried in a silver canopy on an ox-drawn cart from Bollullos to its hermitage. It takes place on the fourth Sunday in October. Another festival is Santiago Apóstol on 25 July, when the patronal image of Santa María de Cuatrovitas is carried from its country chapel into the village. Check the annual festival arrangements before travelling. Las Noches de Cuatrovitas adds to the cultural programme with a music series at the foot of the Almohad minaret in a historic setting.

Church Art and Archaeological Evidence

The parish church of San Martín de Tours preserves four paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán. They depict Santa Catalina, Santa Inés, Santa Lucia and San Blas and are dated to 1640–1645. The works offer a specific insight into 17th-century Spanish painting and a visitor highlight clearly distinct from the festivals at Cuatrovitas.

The Aldea de Cotrovita also contributes to the destination’s historical diversity: archaeological remains have been preserved there that may be associated either with a cleansing ritual or with a hammam. These two possible interpretations point to different uses, but the remains cannot be attributed definitively to just one of them.

Haciendas, Historic Routes and Nature

The Ruta de las Haciendas follows signposted paths between historic rural haciendas whose origins date back to Roman times. A water reservoir from the Almohad period has also been preserved near Bollullos’s historic haciendas. Together, these sites represent different historical reference points: the haciendas’ far-reaching origins and a surviving structure from the Almohad period.

The Centro de Naturaleza de La Juliana is set in a century-old pine forest considered a passage zone for birds travelling to Doñana National Park. The centre has a tree-top adventure park called “Bosque Suspendido”. Its operator describes it as the first tree-top adventure park built in Andalusia. As operating arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting. Tandem jumps are also offered to people with no previous experience; confirm current availability with the provider.

The private Aeródromo La Juliana is intended for visitors and pilots. Access and parking are compulsory and subject to a charge; the site is under video surveillance around the clock. As access conditions and fees may change, it is advisable to check the details before visiting.

Mosto and Regional Cuisine

The recurring Ruta de la Tapa y el Mosto combines traditional and innovative tapas with locally characteristic mosto. It adds a culinary highlight to the town’s historical and cultural attractions. If this event is important to your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.

Bodega Salas offers a closer look at how mosto is made: its mosto comes from the Pedro Ximénez grape variety. The grapes are trodden by foot in Montilla; the mosto ferments in twenty chestnut barrels and is then bottled by hand. At the bodega, you can sample traditional regional stews and grilled meat alongside mosto fermented in its own barrels. Check the latest visiting arrangements before you go.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

Visitors travelling by car or motorcycle from Seville or Huelva can reach Bollullos De La Mitación via the A-49 motorway and exit 11. As road conditions may change, check your route before setting off. When planning the rest of your trip, you can consider the festival dates alongside your personal interests: the processions provide specific dates, while church art, haciendas, nature and mosto offer different themes for your stay.
