Montejaque: Karst, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Montejaque
Montejaque can be explored through several distinct themes: karst and caves, trails through limestone landscapes, and architectural and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Montejaque, you can plan your trip around whether you want to spend more time enjoying the landscape, following the trails or visiting cultural sites.
Karst, Caves and Protected Areas
Near Montejaque, the Gaduares River passes through Cueva del Hundidero and re-emerges at Cueva del Gato, which is more than four kilometres from the entrance to Cueva del Hundidero. Cueva del Hundidero lies at the bottom of a gorge and is more than 50 metres high. At Cueva del Hundidero, both its position in the gorge and the underground course of the river are highlights.
The Presa de los Caballeros complex is located in the natural park and the ZEC Sierra de Grazalema. As a protected area, it is part of the Red de Espacios Naturales Protegidos de AndalucĂa (RENPA), is a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). Its designation as a Biosphere Reserve dates back to 1977. When it was built, the Presa de los Caballeros was a pioneering European civil engineering project of the “arch-dome” type; it reached a height of 83.75 metres.
Trails Through the Limestone Landscape
The Los Llanos de LĂbar trail runs near Montejaque between Montejaque and Cortes de la Frontera, crossing plains enclosed by limestone mountains. Karst features along the trail include poljes, shafts, limestone pavement and sinkholes. The landscape also includes features of high-pasture farming, including Retinta cattle.
In Montejaque, you can start the trail via the track by Bar La Cabaña or along a narrow lane from the central square. If you plan to take this trail, check local access conditions before your visit. These two starting points give you practical guidance for planning without restricting the trail to a single access point.
Another activity is the Presa de los Caballeros Via Ferrata, also known as the Hundidero Via Ferrata. It is located near Cueva del Hundidero in Montejaque, Málaga, and opened on 22 June 2024. The route includes a 60-metre zip line and a 70-metre Tibetan bridge. Both run parallel to the dam wall. Check current operating conditions before visiting.
Churches, Caving and Local History
The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de la EspeleologĂa explains Montejaque’s karst geology, caves, caving topics and cave exploration techniques through panels, display cases and audiovisual media. The centre also serves as an information point for the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. It therefore covers both the area’s geological features and the study and exploration of caves.
The Iglesia de Santiago El Mayor was built in the 16th century in the late Gothic style and rebuilt in 1773. It preserves 18th-century mural decoration. The bell tower also has a clearly defined form: two square levels are followed by an octagonal level, topped by an octagonal spire.
The Ermita de la Escarihuela was built in the first half of the 17th century at the beginning of the historic ascent along the old road to Ronda. The Lavadero Fuente Vieja is a restored washhouse where the women of Montejaque used to do their laundry. The two sites reflect different aspects of local history: the religious and historic tradition of the route on the one hand, and everyday village life in the past on the other.
Festivals and Traditional Cuisine
Montejaque’s patron saint festivals include Carnival, the May fair and pilgrimage, the Verbena de Santiago and the August fair. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates and programmes in advance.
Traditional cuisine is based on Iberian pork products and local ingredients. Dishes and drinks mentioned include olla, guiso de tagarninas, lomo preserved in lard, chorizo, torta de chicharrones, homemade jams and mistela. Availability may vary depending on the establishment and season.
